we had i a really bad year of clowns when i served me time in engineering .
1st year basic collage training on millers shapers lathes etc.
accidents incuded.
writing of a colchester student when turning on with screw thread feed engaged tool post straight into chuck.
surface grinder forgot to engage mag chuck off went work piece into some ones back stitches
clamp failure on horizintal mill with slitting disc and to high a speed.
off it went back of some guys head never seen so much blood.hospital.
some w---er spat in pot when casting ali causing servere burns after explosion.
wound vice up on shaper and engaged knocking it clean off.
never see such a bunch of unintrested tossers.
was 28 years ago.

you should take a trip to the college im in. im an electricial, but still have to do a bench fitting nvq2, and the last time i was in the mechanical workshop, filing away at my steel, one of the turners decided to open the jaws of a 4 jaw chuck, set it to 1900rpm, and throw a calculator into the spinning chuck

he still has the majority of it, just not the bits that ended up in the coolant tank, causing the pump to jam, and burn out, causing 5 of us leccies being assigned to fix the pump and motor instead of doing our coursework.

all an experience i suppose though

a guy at work came to work one day with loads of big dents on his motor bike, i asked him were they came from, and he said the bike would not start (rd350) so he chucked it on the ground and beat the s**t out of it. hes now dead from suicide.

That's odd, I knew a guy with a mint RD350 who hanged himself (mid-90s?)... his mother came home and found his feet dangling out of the loft hatch

Where was the intake filter of the pump? It's nigh-on impossible to jam one of those things.

it has no mesh filter. it is a system designed by previous apprentices, consisting of a small 24Vdc motor and a pump below the coolant tray. the coolant tray is slightly angled to the rear right corner( as you look at the lathe), and around the drain hole is a raised lip approx 12mm. this allows the coolant level to build until it overflows the lip, and the majority of the swarf, in theory, gets stopped by the lip. (it also means the pump runs dry of coolant occasionally and allows us to practice mixing coolant, soluble oil/water) it isnt extremely reliable, but when it does jam up, or break, it allows the current apprentices experience of working on pumps

5 of us were assigned, as none of us had any experience of working or any sort of pump, and as everyone chipped in and made suggestions we consider it a team effort (as such, this helped towards our 'working with others' section of the key skills training we have to do) as the most we do in our nvq at year 1 is a single phase motor and basic plc control (forwards backwards and stop), along with domestic power cicuits and some electronics.
