I just use a suitable size nut cut in half to make a cradle to support the cable lug and an 8mm ball bearing. put between the 6" vice jaws and squeeze, Perfectly secure fitting.

Did the job here every time.

Sounds really clever - but you must have lots of hands.......and ever more 8mm ball bearings.....

Do you remember what size cables those are? I need to do something similar on the front of the house to tie the roses into.

Just a bit of additional info about the cheapo hydraulic crimpers.

I think that they are all made by the same company, maybe Baolifeng Tools Co Ltd. I may be wrong on this but it was a name that popped up when I was trying to find the manufacturer previously.

Anyway heres a table from the manual that came with my YQK-300;



and an English translation.



There are two things to note, first the top line shows the sizes for Aluminium lugs and the second is for Copper

The third line shows the maximum clamping pressure in LONG tons (ie 2240lb pukka tons). These usually get translated into US SHORT tons (ie 2000lb micky mouse tons) so 6,8,12 and 13 long tons get ebayed to 10 , 12, 16 and 16 ebay tons.

I find that you need three hands to use these crimps, which makes using the YQK-240 and 300 difficult, the smaller YQK-70 and 120 are much easier to use as you can hold them in a vice, leaving two hand free..

The thing I like about these crimps is that they are nice and wide as opposed to the mechanical crimps ,of which I have two pairs for some reason, which are a bit narrow.

I bought the 16ton yellow crimper back in 2016, gets used a few times a month and not had a problem with it.

Ive got the same one 16ton. It seems ok if you use the next smaller die. I've also got a cembre but only one die set and this was cheaper than just one die set.

I've seen the £30 eBay yellow jobbies but they only seem to do 70mm and I need to do 90mm2.

saw this for £70. Has anyone bought one of these. Looks to have good reviews.

I've got that exact one

crimped a bunch of 300mm csa cables/crimps with it


it is cheap Chinese gear.... but works fine, no problems here :-)

Ive got the same one 16ton. It seems ok if you use the next smaller die. I've also got a cembre but only one die set and this was cheaper than just one die set.

As well as using one die smaller I find that you can use one die as per normal & the other on the flat side.
Especially on the smallest sizes.
It does create wings but they can be filled off.

I've done several starter leads and winches. It's important that you get the correct lugs for the cables whatever system you use. Cables are measured on cross sectional area , like mains cable , not diamater.

I bought a yellow painted set of these years many ago, 16T and dies to go up to 300mm, the largest I have ever used was the 90mm lugs for my welding cables and it did those with ease. They are pretty cheap and although I hardly ever use mine now that I am retired, it is one of those tools that just sits on my shelf most of the time but I wouldn't sell them off. Every now and then I put them to use and am really glad to have a set.
