with all this talk of foundries and castings, i put 2 +2 together ad came up with 7!, I have family up in millom and have been to see what remains of the iron industry over there (nothing!) Not sure if the rolling mill at whitehaven is still going though.

bit of a bug bear of mine, but it really annoys me when i see towns that where once an integral part of the industrial revolution (Wigan included) with nothing left to see, no pits, no industry and nothing to even say what was there. sorry for going off topic!

I agree, it's a long time ago but I still remember going out on a job to Shotton Steelworks as it was all being demolished, it really was sad to see.I think banking is all important now, and as far as politicians are concerned the UK can do without engineering and manufacturing industry!

the casting stays in the pit for three to four weeks and is still mad hot when we're working on it down there, it burns your feet through the boots so we use pieces of 1" thick plywood to stand on and change them for a new (cold) piece every few minutes, if you leave it too long , it bursts into flames, this is whilst we're cleaning it, when it's ready for burning, the sand get dug out to about five feet deep from the top edge of the casting so that we're cutting the heads (risers) at shoulder height..

A modern trailer that can handle 500tons plus tend to drive under the object to be lifted and then raise the suspension the load if lifted off the blocks it was resting on.

the moulds are made in large pits, once poured and left to cool for long enough, they are 'dug' out with excavators, this involves removing hot sand down to a level which is comfy for us (burners) to remove the heads, this reduces the weight to around 360/380tonnes, it's then liffted by two overhead travelling cranes one of which has a SWL of 250 tonnes and the other 200tonnes, we have a beam that weighs 25tonnes that is rated at SWL 450tonnes so, once fitted to the cranes this will allow 425tonnes to be lifted

As a lad I used to watch the little trains carrying/tipping the slag from the furness-es at night, from my aunts house in Millom which over looked the old iron works...and I remember the mine at Haverigg (Hodbarrow Mine, I believe???) working and then closing down.

Also Millom Iron Works was featured on Tomorrows World for perfecting and producing the very first ingot of spray steel, I believe they injected compressed air into the molten metal just as it was pored, if I remember correctly...then a couple of years latter it was closed down.

A 1000 tonne mobile crane, a 1500 tonne gantry crane....plus a couple of other smallish cranes in the last link..a 3700 tonne floater..

I found a site once that had a pair of fork lifts that had three rams that could life 500T (ISH) each. The forks would self level between the two machines designed for lifting crane tracts into place.

I worked for Ainscough crane hire a long time ago. Biggest crane they had then was 35ton. I'm not sure but I think that 1000 toner is the biggest mobile in the UK.

i'm fairly sure that a company that transports our castings have two cranes with capacities over a thousand tonnes, i think they are 1200T and 1800T, the company is either alleyly's or ALE (abnormal lift engineers or something like that!)

oooof- they now have a 4,300te crane (don't know what te means though!)
