Cutting discs for 3mm mild steel

I am learning to weld, and I have bought a large sheet of 3mm thick mild steel.

The problem is cutting this into more manageable pieces.

I have a decent 115mm angle grinder and some Bosch INOX cutting discs - a new disc seem reality good at cutting but it wears down and gets toothy really quickly.

Are there better cutting discs I can use to cut this material - or is just a PITA to work with?

Befriend someone local with a plasma cutter.

If they are getting "toothy" you may be forcing them a bit too much.
Hold the grinder lightly and let them cut through at their own pace and don't force them sideways if they are only 1mm thick.

I've used one on 6mm sheet and it worked well.

They have limited capacity in terms of sheet size.

It was a long time ago, when they were first available but i'm sure it was orange.

But, how big is your "sheet"? OP said he'd bought a "large sheet".

I have used cheep ones, expensive ones.

Best is not to force the disc, let its weight do the work.

Mark your line and let the grinder guide you on how fast to cut.

Keep them dry and free of oil.

Have a word with your steel supplier, they will give you advice on what they stock and what sells.

Or give your self a work out, buy a hacksaw.

Are you using the 1mm thin cutting discs or the normal 2.5mm cutting discs?

I've never had much problem using a 1mm cutting disc running it along a straight edge to get a nice clean cut through something like 3mm.

I use 0.8 flexovite discs. Brilliant.

0.8mm Flexovit user too, Never had a "toothy" problem, the trick with all these thin cutting discs is to let them cut at their own speed, do not push hard to aid faster cutting, used properly the discs last very well,

The INOX discs are for cutting Stainless so they are "softer" than those for mild steel......so they wear out faster

As Al says, they can wear faster, but this is in the design for cutting harder/tougher materials so that the discs are constantly exposing new sharp grit particles to aid cutting,

Yes . Never had any problems with them. They are the best discs I have used. Just have to watch how you put your grinder down. As they don't take a lot before they crack.
