Typical equipment would be a band knife but you could make do with an electric carving knife. That's what I use when I get this blue upholstery foam and its worked fine for me so far.

Easy to build, cheap, perfect results. Bit of an overkill for one job but you could jury rig something like that in minutes. All you need is some nichrome wire.

Going down the electric carving knife route as that seems the easiest, ive been through that kitchen place when it was unattended and its not appeared so i can only assume its still packed in the boxes we havent opened from the move 7 years ago!
