For aluminium mentholated spirit is good as for some reason that I can't explain it is drawn towards the cutter rather than repealed like cutting oil is. The purple stuff can also stain so it's best to use the clear stuff.

I use Rocol, mainly because my neighbour usually leaves whatever is left in a bottle for me if he comes around to use my lathe or mill, a little goes a long way. I would probably buy some if I run out. I had a batch of identical brand new Dormer jobber drills, 9mm if I remember rightly, and was drilling a load of holes in some 4mm plate. At first I couldn't find the Rocol and drilled dry, the drill bit lost its shine after a few holes. I then used some engine oil, better, probably 3 or 4 times as many holes. I then discovered the Rocol under the bench detritus, I finished off the remaining holes with the same drill after that.

About 20 quid for a 400g bottle retail.I was drilling a piece of stainless today without lubricant and thought about this thread... It cuts so much easier with a bit of oil.

I think your neighbour is talking out of his ****.
More often that not I cut new threads dry, but when I do use oil I use whatever is to hand, be it engine oil, 3 in 1, paper shredder oil,
waylube, etc.
You need the correct lube for the metal in question cutting new without question
Clean up? Depends how bad but I should prefer some if it were bad over none

For general hand work, drilling, tapping, cutting at the bench, I just keep a squirty bottle of 50/50 diesel/ATF, and I find my drills and blades last for ages. Even those cheap little throwaway jobbers drills (3.5mm that I use for pilot holes) that are too fiddly to bother sharpening last for yonks. I don't mean the horrible cheapanese ones, but semi-decent types.
