I've been thinking a bit more about this drive shaft and something occurred to me... Not only is the dumper articulated in the middle to allow steering but the axles are also able to rotate / twist a certain amount independently of one another to allow for different gradients under front and back axle if it was solid it would be even easier to tip (and being so narrow they don't take a lot to tip over anyway 
). The effect would be that the drive flanges on the transfer box and the front axle would rarely ever be parallel, in phase or even at the same distance to one another (though the splined telescopic section would deal with that) except when driving straight forward/back on perfectly flat ground. In this case a simple double universal joint would surely bind up?
Having googled a bit and thrown up a few possible spline matches I've come to the conclusion that I maybe urinating against the wind trying to find the right one - am I the only one who thinks it's ludicrous that every single model of car has to have their own specific spline configuration and even that appears to differ between different years - I'm guessing it can only be a money making exercise for the manufacturers.
I've emailed Cautrac to see how much a replacement CV joint only will be but something tells me I'll be replacing both the splined end of the shaft and the CV joint itself with something having a common spline arrangement and can be replaced cheaply.

Thanks for the suggestion I'll add it to the list - seems like quite a few fiat models are based on 25 splines - which kind of makes sense given their both French. I might take a trip to a motor factors and see if they have any to check against.
I think that's probably how it's going to end I will wait till I get a reply on the cost of a direct replacement but I'm not holding my breath. Golf is a good shout though it might likely be whatever a friend happens to be scrapping next...

Yes Volvo bought Pel-job out and eventually phased them out IRC. They did change a few things in the design when they started making the Volvo ED750 but I would imagine drive shafts would be the same but there's even fewer of them about. Spline configuration would have pre-dated Volvos involvement by quite some time so a match with volvo car parts would be co-incidental unfortunately.
Well this is on a small dumper running off a simple 2 cylinder diesel (Mitsubishi L2E) only 15hp flat out when new so would think just about any half shaft off a modern car should handle that power without much issue - I hope. Torque aside range of travel might be a limiting factor I really don't know without trying it and seeing what happens.

the reason it has the uj is on the axle is that it stays reasonable straight and the cv goes through the greatest angle , when the uj is straight , it also is CV constant velocity and therefore the two stay at the same speed whereas if the front was a uj it would damage the prop due to the acceleration deceleration of the centre shaft through its rotation on full articulation.
