DAF 4X4 Ex MOD Truck

As I've changed my mind from buying a Bedford RL to a more modern DAF 4X4 I'd thought I'd start a new thread.
Prices seem to start at about £3500, I'd like to spend a bit more than that to get one with a canvas tilt and sides on the bed and in a reasonably good condition but annoyingly the dealers seem to be at least a 3 hr journey away from Somerset with Hamptons in Newcastle Under Lyme being the closest.
@DAPPH did you get to work on these or was it after you completed your service?

I feel if you can afford the extra they are a better buy only driven one in the mud they are very capable with good tyres on.

Withams have this, bit rusty, but not bad at £1450 plus addons...

I think Withams put one DAF into the auction every month, I was watching the last one which had 116000km and it was at £2000 with 2 hrs to go but I didn't see what it sold for.
From reading the blurb the only additional costs is the VAT.

The DAFF's arrived after my service run out date .

Have you checked out Withams MOD vehicle sales ( at Easton on the Hill ( ?) ) ) near Grantham ?

They are at " MOD-SALES.COM "
They may well have the stuff you require if you care to phone them .

Just had a novel interesting thought . I wonder if the rags off the MOD's MK's will fit them ?
For playing in the sand locker will have produced a pile of surplus MK ones . Most MOD vehicles are made to specific air airportable / shipping measurements , perhaps it's worth checking out the dimensions for them if it's at all possible

But I've had a read around , and although they're rated for 12t, they can be downplated cos they weigh about6.5t empty, giving g a 1T payload - which is enough for a camper conversion .

It only got delivered to me this morning and I'm really pleased with it.
Tested everything including the Diff Lock and Hi/Low Ratio and it all works a treat.
Only thing that seems to be duff is the horn and the odometer.
I dipped the oil and at first I thought there was none on the stick but then I realised it was still clear which is unheard of in my experience of diesels.
Driving it is dead easy apart from the air brakes, touch the pedal and it's like someone has thrown out a 10 ton ground anchor!
The canopies are a bit scruffy so those will get replaced. It even has a sun roof... a removable hatch in the cab roof that the machine gunner was supposed to use, unfortunately I can't seem to find the machine gun, it must be there somewhere.
It even has the fire extinguishers in their boxes.
The plan is to register it as an agricultural tractor and use it as it is and at a later date fit a camping module on to it and register it as a camper.

Does it have the boughton winch and and the PTO drive on the gearbox?

If it's registered as a tractor will the HGV restrictions still apply?

if it's registered as a tractor it will limited to tractor speeds on the road. Registering as limited agricultural use is the way to go I would think.

The winch trucks are really expensive, this one was £2500 plus the Vat and I'm so chuffed with what you get for your money.
Registering it as an agricultural tractor has benefits:
No mot.
Free tax.
Can use red diesel.
Can be driven on a car licence.
No tachograph requirements.
The down side is the penalties if you are caught using it for activities other than agriculture or forestry are severe.

Other option is as a camper or derate it as under 7.5T.

Camper means easy MOT but no carrying goods even for your own use.

Derating means plating instead of MOT, tachographs unless one of the exemptions apply and a load capacity of around 1 to 1.5 T depending on whether you have the sides and tailgate on.

Other option is to register it as LGV which gives you a load capacity of 5T but you need C entitlement on your licence.

That's only for limited use vehicles, tractors can go as far as they want but not on motorways and they are limited on speed.

Are you planning on striping it back before you start camper conversion, it would be good to know the weight before conversion, I had looked at these too but thought 1t for the conversion didn't allow much to play with, especially once water, gas and provisions were added, will follow with interest.
