Dahlander motor

I'm considering purchasing a machine with a built in Dahlander motor. Rating plate says 415V.

i would normally feel confident about finding the star point and rewiring for low voltage Delta use, but maybe not this one. I'm assuming it could be troublesome.

i have no shortage of motors, but this one is built in and can't be changed.

any comment before I make a decision?

If the motor cannot be re-connected for lower voltage, then the volts/Hz scaling arrangement in this note might be useful. It has some limitations etc. but good to know about.

A 400V x 50Hz motor can be used at 230V x 29Hz when supplied by an Inverter Drive.

A guy on the model engineer forum had this problem recently and got over it by using a 240-415v VFD.

Its labelled as an he200 vfd.



Cost was £61.71 delivered to my home. Instructions were in mandarin, but the seller emailed me a link to English instructions on request.

Easily wired up, and it performs perfectly fine. With the mill set to "high speed" on the switch selector, I do have to give the spindle a quick spin to get it going, otherwise it just buzzes. Once it gets started it accelerates well and has sufficient power for what I need.

Thanks Pete. I'm collecting the drill tomorrow and will be taking a look at it in due course. If the bearings and spindle are good, and I can get the motor going, I may be keeping this drill and selling my QDM750. Anyway, let's see what happens. I have a bad drill and motor habit...

My Meddings cold saw has got a two speed motor 415v only.

I bought a 220v to 380v vfd from Aliexpress, something like this.

I have wired it up quickly to test but have not used the machine and vfd in anger/ for an extended amount of time yet so I can't give comprehensive feedback on the vfd.

About £100 will get you one of those nflixin vfds and the one @Pete. Linked even cheaper. Might be worth a try.

I think it will be useful to have a 220v to 380v vfd one can use to 'test' other motors which can't be rewired to ~ 240v before committing to buy another 220v to 380v vfd.

You could possibly borrow mine to see if it all works/meet your expectations. I will be down your way in a week or two.

I bought the drill. Looks much better than I had expected. Substantial, but compact footprint. Table and head on separate rise/fall racks. Head has a ratchet and clever release mechanism making it very easy to swing around. Makes Meddings seem a bit inferior.

No idea if the motor and gearbox work but we'll find out in due course. Photos will follow.

Perhaps resist the urge to demonstrate that until it is bolted to the floor.

Does it have any manufacturer's marking? It is similar in concept to some Arboga machines and Startrite EFI (which were made in Portugal).

I've cleaned it up a bit (despite the rain showers) and hooked it up to a 230V VFD. It runs in high and low speed and the gears seem to work fine. There is a small clicking noise ( motor or gearbox) so that's what I'll take a look at next. Seems like a good buy for just £50.
