I've cleaned it up a bit (despite the rain showers) and hooked it up to a 230V VFD. It runs in high and low speed and the gears seem to work fine. There is a small clicking noise ( motor or gearbox) so that's what I'll take a look at next. Seems like a good buy for just £50.
Next job. Quill spring adjustment seized and examine wiring. Also, I want to change the high/low arrangement to be integrated into the vfd function so high/low cannot be changed when the vfd is running.
The aluminium spring retainer thing was seized in solid, hence could not be adjusted. Had to remove spring under some tension - not my favourite job! Pressed part out using fly press. I'm tempted to make a new improved spring retainer.
