Dealing with tyre kickers.

Recently I thought I would advertise my Unimog for sale,its got a camper box on the back and only done 24,000km in 40 odd years. As you can imagine it was a bit of a tyre kicker/dreamer fantasy wagon.

Nothing,nothing could have prepared me for the absolute tsunami of tyre kickers that whipped themselves into a frenzy at the prospect of buying it . People were trying to get discounts if they promoted my company on instagram,some wanted to hire it,people were telling me thay had found a terrible error in the registration doccuments so it was only really worth 1/3 of what I was asking.

I would say I had about 300 messages,emails,but not one phone call! It seems to a large section of society that flinging out random messages lowballing expensive vehicles is a way of life?

anyhoo its still for sale so if anyone has a spare £20K I will put it on a boat to England the day after I get the money.

Its in considerably better condition to mine. Love the hardtop cab. Those non genuine rear mudguards would devalue it massively

Unfortunately when selling anything, this is what happens these days. Obviously an international problem ! They only have to get lucky once.

I would just stick to the price as take it or leave it, and only bother to respond to someone who enquires more than once. Anyone who is keen will be on your case. Remember that desperate is not a good thing to be when selling.

I've not sold anything desirable or high value in the current era but some some desirable stuff in the early 2000s and ended up having a couple of big lads on security duty. Weeded out the test pilots by telling them to bring the asking price in cash if they wanted a test drive

Sound like it's a million times worse now!

Ag spec, nice. Bit overkill for a camper, fit a tipping chip box on the back and it will probably sell. I think the overlander/camper scene has died a bit of a death, seems to be a lot on the market that don’t move.

I had the same selling my trike, one clown arranged a viewing, then pointed out that it had a Reliant engine. And a single seat. And it was hardtail, which meant the frame would crack. And it would need over a grand off the price to rectify those issues……

I pointed out that everything was clearly stated on the advert, with a dozen photos, and showed him the door. Conversation over.

Yes unfortunately most of the population cannot communicate nowadays and low ball, moronic offers are 99% of what you get selling anything nice.

Loads of optimistically priced defenders about too, not even at "lockdown" pricing, but more an extension of that, with the idea that it's still a rising market, and they must have been the "investment opportunity" that they were advertised as.

I reckon my 110, which isn't for sale anyway, would have been 10k at the peak but probably down to 5ish again now.


As everyone knows, it only matters if you're buying or selling, and im doing neither, but it's still a curiosity.

They likely wouldn't even know it was there until they'd twatted it. Those type aren't renowned as thinkers.

Apparently the motor had had several well known tuning tricks done to it, and was quite peppy. It would pull 70mph uphill and down dale with ease.

Oh yes, 60BHP was available from tuning, a 50% increase over standard. Good, lightweight and reliable engines they were and a good reason why they got used in other ways. Mind you, 40BHP in a Mk1 Robin would see an indicated 90MPH if pushed.

I had a really good one in my Liege that had been developed a well known guy but it was totally let down by the gearbox . Chucked it out for a Suzuki swift 3 cylinder 993 plus a 430 5 speed box much better on every count.

Based on what I see up here it's the Germans that love these things. I dread to think of the fuel bills and how long it takes them to get anywhere.
