Recently I thought I would advertise my Unimog for sale,its got a camper box on the back and only done 24,000km in 40 odd years. As you can imagine it was a bit of a tyre kicker/dreamer fantasy wagon.

Nothing,nothing could have prepared me for the absolute tsunami of tyre kickers that whipped themselves into a frenzy at the prospect of buying it . People were trying to get discounts if they promoted my company on instagram,some wanted to hire it,people were telling me thay had found a terrible error in the registration doccuments so it was only really worth 1/3 of what I was asking.

I would say I had about 300 messages,emails,but not one phone call! It seems to a large section of society that flinging out random messages lowballing expensive vehicles is a way of life?

anyhoo its still for sale so if anyone has a spare £20K I will put it on a boat to England the day after I get the money.

Loads of optimistically priced defenders about too, not even at "lockdown" pricing, but more an extension of that, with the idea that it's still a rising market, and they must have been the "investment opportunity" that they were advertised as.

I reckon my 110, which isn't for sale anyway, would have been 10k at the peak but probably down to 5ish again now.


As everyone knows, it only matters if you're buying or selling, and im doing neither, but it's still a curiosity.

My neighbour whose 'into' his cars but doesn't know a screwdriver from a spanner is looking at buying a Defender. He sent me links to a 25 year old Td5 90 and a 17 year old TDCI 110 and asked what I thought. All bling, resprayed, led lights, upgraded grills, quilted bucket seats etc. £20k+ . Told him he needs to concentrate on the chassis and bulkhead condition and mechanicals and look past the bling. But what do I know

Based on what I see up here it's the Germans that love these things. I dread to think of the fuel bills and how long it takes them to get anywhere.

What sort of gallons per mile does it deliver?

Tyre kickers are everywhere, I "sold" a limited edition competition off road bike twice on Eb@y (the only one in the UK that was road registered), it was a proper magnet for idiots as it looked as good as it performed. Both times the winning bidder turned up then decided it was too uncivilised and they didn't want it. I put in in the back of the garage and sold it for scrap price last year to a genuine chap just to avoid any more idiots. I still have a VFR750 in storage that could be for sale - I just can't get enthusiastic about calls from more of the same..

Not so bad if they are earning, at sub 15mpg it makes them a tad thirsty for pleasure use.

No, the lads have managed to sit them on top of a few cars over the years and had a few cars driving into the PTO chippers but never had one turned over.

Weather warning possible dump of snow to a depth of 10's of millimeters for the south of England expected to last most of the day but will be gone by the time the kids come out of school . It's tough dealing with tyre kickers, you cannot shoot them but I suppose you could always run a few over if you had a Unimog!

I am sure that in our day, we just called it the beginning of the Winter season. I don't recall danger to life warnings and the like in 1963 and (1983?), we just dealt with it as it happened.
