Defender Td5 alternator issues.

It was the alternator . 45 minutes to remove.

Auto electrician rang. That coppery looking paste is whats left of the slip rings

On the plus side a new one means eveything is new including the vac pump

They have many failure modes.

Most either work or don't, some fail when hot, some come and go, some start working when hit with a hammer, etc. Ford ones like to short out and sap all battery power very quickly.

Last one I had a problem with, there was an oil leak just above the alternator. Oil combined with road dust made a nice grinding paste which eventually wore away the slip rings.

Twigworth Breakers (RIP) rebuilt it for me for £80. Don't know anyone locally offering such a service any more.

You can buy the rebuild kits and slip rings (the auto eleccy probably has them in but theyre maxxed out at this time of year)

Ill fit a new unit and probably rebuild the old one slow time as a spare. To be fair its 18 years old, can’t imagine the old lucas acr types lasting so long

We all moan that everything is rubbish/doesnt work/made out of chinesium but hasnt that alternator lasted well im amazed it didnt burst into flames! if that had happened on a modern i bet it would have taken out loads of other electronic thingys

Success. New alternator fitted

Had to make a brass doobrie for the negative battery clamp so its nice and tight now. Also what I thought was a randomly leaky rad was a loose hose clamp under the fan shroud. Oh and the fuel cooler needs new O rings

I thought they were the posh(overpriced) lazer ones

Although there a great light I wouldn’t be spending that on a light that could get nicked

Having a look today. My gut feeling is a cell has gone short on the battery. I had the intelligent charger on overnight and it was only reading 12.7 volts this morning. Fired it up and got a reading of 14.7 volts. Ill swap batteries with the one off the rs and see how it behaves

@blackolive (Ste) I know this is an old thread but I found it looking for something else and I thought I'd mention that battery isn't the correct one for a Disco 2 TD5. The original battery is a higher capacity and has centre terminals.
