Degreaser

Hi everyone,

I’m after some non caustic degreaser. Screwfix sold some for £12. But they just changed it up and now it’s caustic.

I’ve been struggling to find something since that is non caustic, I have been watering it down and putting it in my ultrasonic cleaner. The parts I need to replace are irreplaceable Ali engine casings.

I did wonder about using non caustic tfr which is cheap enough but I’m not sure if it will leave a glossy film on all the parts.

Have a look at the ali wheel tfr that euro car parts sell in 20ltr tubs.

Non acidic wheel cleaner would do the job, TFR can damage aluminium if it is left to dwell for too long.

Bilt Hamber Surfex degreaser, really good general purpose cleaner, never used it in a pressure washer though. It’s very similar to the old Screwfix stuff that you dilute with water. More money though.

Mild caustic wont do alu parts any harm, doubt its strong enough to be a problem.

They have another one that appears non caustic from the msds

TFR can cause a slight black staining on aluminium parts even if used briefly IMO.

There are specific aluminium cleaners but they tend to be caustic also and it will corrode / white up quickly after.

A water based degreaser solution should work well. Or just hot water and a shot of fairly liquid in the ultrasonic cleaner. I bought a 25L drum of water based degreaser from ebay for my parts washer diluted 30% into water and it works really well. I would give a link but threw out the old jar on my last parts washer flush and refill and don't recognize the ones on ebay to be the same but I'm sure there are many out there.

If you can Vapour blasting is best but wash the parts very well after to ensure no grit left. This is a V8 engine of mine

Very good for pointing that out. They must’ve found a pallet of it. The took it off the site completely a couple weeks back when I needed some. Looks like they aren’t going to re stock so I ordered 20l in 5l cans. It’ll last a fair while at least! I’ll worry again in the future

That’s beautiful the engine is getting painted to go back to being original. That’s the only reason I want to degrease first.

Well I may as well add a later shot when it was just installed



If you are thinking of painting aluminium parts consider getting someone experienced to Powder coat them.

My valve covers above where metallic silver powder coated they are magnesim material. The rest of the aluminium was vapour blasted and left original but needs alot of upkeep. This car just hibernates in my garage now!

If painting aluminium an etch primer would be a critical first step to ensure it sticks and doesn't start peeling later which would be a nightmare.

Yea I have Ali etched everything that’s Ali.

Regarding car cleaning - how many have had alloy wheels that will not come off when needed to be removed? I tried to help someone, with a puncture, at a service station earlier this year. The wheel would not come off - likely needed a sledge hammer (on a piece of wood) to knock it off.

Apparently it is the cleaning agents the car valeting people use - it gets sprayed on, gets behind the wheel centre and causes the problem months/years later.
