Diamond core drills?

I have got by using this type of core drill until today:



I am talking about masonry cavity wall coring here BTW.

I have a decent kango type large mains hammer drill that I've used with this.

But it's not long enough to get the heater pipes through the wall today so I am going to head to screwfix now to pick this up:





I think I was OK to use hammer function on the old bit I had. But with diamond core I understand I should NOT use hammer function and instead dry or wet drill.

I will be OK for today in terms of using that drill for a 38mm core dry drilling.

But does a core specific drill have a clutch or something or what is different? And is there a relatively diy affordable 230v drill out there?

Ive drilled a lot of 38mm holes lately with just a normal but heavy duty dewalt mains drill but any larger than that best to use a clutched one my 90 degree motor kango has one , it realy hurts when they grab without a clutch !

if you can run it with some water flushing through even better

Core drills do have a clutch, its a basic friction clutch made up of brass and steel discs usually. You can use those bits on a stadard drill but you'll need a beefy one or frequent stops to cool down and for 1.5" holes in brick you'll want to turning about 1000rpm though they are very tolerant of speed ranges.

I use those tipped type you have ,with an extension arbor,though never gone beyond 330mm and with an old hilti with a clutch from 40-80mm diameter.

A fairly standard drill motor to turn those is a Makita 8406. You can pick one up for about £80 (110v ones are cheaper). Make sure it has the handle as the body is M12 x 1.5 fine thread so a standard M12 bolt will not fit. In addition, the replacement clutch assembly (150178-0) is nearly the same price as a second hand drill.

Forgot to say that as above, you can buy extensions for the one you show in the top picture. Standard diamond core drills are 1/2" BSP but the carbide ones are not. I have M22 in my head, but please check.

Well that was a total ball ache of a job. Maybe my SDS kango is too slow but that took over an hour solid drilling for the 2x holes





With the extension perfect to get right through the wall from one side.

Thanks for that- yes I'll look out for a 230v 8406 drill would like the proper one for this kit.

And yes you are correct about the carbide extensions being a different size. I measured 22mm. I wanted this job done today and screwfix didn't have anything else suitable. They had 1/2 inch extensions only which are for diamond cores. And having this full kit meant I had all I need in one box to get this job done today. I will likely look out for a m22 extension also. The carbide ones drill faster in hammer mode but then I don't use that often either so a proper diamond set up would be the ticket for me.

Yes m22 is the uncommon alternative,annoyingly.

if your coring out up to 100mm holes its preferable to have a 1000watt motor drill , i use a 1300w dewalt core drill. whatever you use needs a clutch unless you like having a broken wrist.. and dont use it on hammer with a diamond core drill

I have the same kit, it's been very useful, I have a 110v Makita 8406 core drill that was second hand and hardly used from the bay for £40.
It's got more power and speed than an SDS.
With those core bits it goes through brick with ease.
I burned out a titan SDS cutting 6inch cores with it. Hence I bought the Makita.

Get yourself a Weka drill, DK12/13/16 or similar.

Or if you're feeling particularly brave a Marcrist drill there's one for 50 quid on Ebay. Better hold on tight to that one though.

Mains drill should have no issue with 38mm, I have done 32mm on a cheapy parkside cordless.

I have a few spare Im unlikely to use, 52mm and 152mm I believe they are. I dont have anything suitable to drive the 152mm so made an adaptor for the engine auger, which I think may be far too slow.

If you can drill from outside - pilot from inside, perhaps an adaptor on a combi engine could be a good speed for it.
For my engine, extension poles are quite cheap so I could easily make an adaptor.

The standard SF and TS offerings are made to be general purpose items that will do OK on most things but not brilliantly on any. That is to be expected given the market into which they are sold.

Just as diamond blades are made in 'hard' and 'soft' versions (asphalt needs a hard blade; concrete a soft blade - the hard/soft relates to the binder and thus the speed at which fresh new abrasive is exposed), more specialist suppliers will sell you diamond core bits more closely tuned to a specific material.

I cut through the side of a concrete manhole chamber with a 125mm cutter using an old burgess gut buster drill it was single speed 250rpm it snagged twisted the handles out of my hands one hit the ground and it snapped the chuck off the drill. Since then I've used a clutched drill.

The bricks in my house are like granite! It is circa 50 yesr old concrete bricks and they are hard as hell. Obo nails bend and won't drive into them so every fixing etc has to be SDS drilled. So when coring this wall, it was particularly hard concrete.

hardest ive had was coring well trying to a random granite rock wall a quality norton one wouldnt touch it carbide sds wouldnt and just sparked the same as a quality sds chissel

After your 38mm practice run you can upgrade your gear and go for 450mm, like the Hatton Garden geezers did:
