yes, used a medium filter.
using a 50:50 its halfords own mix of cellouse and there own thinners.

ive just dicovered that the gun uses a massive 12.5cfm air so is your compressor up to it what cfm is the compressor
or it could be that your regulator or airline isnt delivering enough volume of air to keep the syphon steady some regulators wont let 12.5 cfm through

just checked and the manual says 8.5cfm (fad). so guessing thats the problem.
but saying that the other gun is a sliverline ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-783124-Gravity-Feed-Spray/dp/B000LG0VMU ) and it says:
# 45 to 60 psi working pressure
# 4.2 to 7.1 cfm air consumption
and i still get the artex effect. The airline was just the standard little sip one thats been replaced with a 10meter sip 10mm line and i got this affect on both lines.

it could be the regulator or airline
when the comp is full it will run the gun but would not run it constantly as the pump wouldnt keep up.
if you could try the gun on another set up just to check its not the gun or
remove the regulator (just to test it) let the compressor build up to around 50psi (no higher) and try the gun that will tell you if the regulator is restricting the air needed

i'll try that in the morning and report back with the results (just abit late to fire the compressor up again )

How far are you holding the gun from the surface you are spraying onto? I use one like the Silverline gravity gun at 50psi with 50/50 cellulose and it works perfectly 8" to 10" from the surface at 90°. Keep your travel speed up and overlap the wet edge so you don't get a dry line, experiment on some cardboard or the back of the shed door to set your fan and material delivery rate.

I've not had much success, I got a smaller hose (5ft) and another gun fired some water through the gun onto a metal surface and still get the same pattern with water with the lower cfm tools it still likes to stutter but is not that noticeable but looking close you can see it.
So I checked the compressor over and it all seems fine to me, if i let the compressor build up to 90 psi and pull the trigger in on the gun it drops to about a working pressure of 70 psi its always been the same so guessing its normal as all other tools work fine.
so the only thing I can think of is as the snooper says a regulator fault?
