Die grinder on a budget.

Has anyone recently purchased a cheap die grinder that they would recommend?

There was someone who bought a refurbished evolution one recently and seemed really happy with it. I think they were only 30-40 blats.

Chicago pneumatics are good if you find one on fleabay.

I purchased a cheap "Silverline Die Grinder" that can be had for 18 quid on fleabay, not had a problem with my grinder I just oil the motor frequently, for 18 quid if it goes wrong bin it and buy another.......buy decent carbide burrs these can be expensive but well worth it.

I got one of these and very happy with it for the money, great for carbide burrs but not to much grunt for flap discs or small mops.

I've always found flap disc's need an electric drill, battery or mains.

An oil can, light oil (3 in 1, WD40 or hydraulic oil) open the trigger and pump a small amount into the air inlet before connecting the air line, then just blow the oil through the motor...just keep your fingers away from the air exhaust until the oils gone through the motor...

Buy a cheap one and work it to death, is there really 30+ quids difference between these two, look remarkably the same to me.

Considering there's a 3 years warranty on the Silverline one, its not a bad deal...

I have a pneumatic one and an electric one, the electric one gets a lot more use, both are noisy gits, but worth their weight in gold when you have a job nothing else will do. Are you planning to do some cylinder head porting psycho ?

i need something to get into hard to reach places to grind back some messy welds.

You need a decent air supply to run a die grinder continuously, my 14cfm struggles to keep up regulated down to 90psi.

I got used to using die grinders in work where we used them for getting bolt holes to line up or removing burrs, they always struck me as a very handy machine, so i bought a stayer electric one in the tool shop beside the trade college over here. Like i said , worth its weight in gold at times,mand its gotten me out of manys a fix.

i have a single 14cfm compressor, and busy working on another. so will have 28cfm of supply

My die grinder uses 4cfm @ 90ps and my small 9cfm with 50 ltr tank appears to keep up with it, suggest you check your compressor over...

My main larger 14cfm compressor switches off while using the grinder...

4cfm @ 22k rpm is the quoted figure for my cheapy die grinder, similar claims for the 75mm cutoff tool but I don't believe either of them. I had a 9cfm compressor some years back and it would only run the die grinder if the speed adjuster was trimmed down. The 14cfm keeps up ok when shotblasting using a 3mm nozzle on a suction gun. What size motor is on your 14cfm?
