that is a leg on the workbench in my garage, it has gearboxes and other heavy lumps put on it to work on and things that get hit with big hammers and I would happily stand on it.
Just use a reasonable piece of timber for the leg and a proper hex head coach/carriage screw
Some of the strength probably comes from the mortise and tenon joinery of the side rails fitted to the leg.
I’m not planning any such joinery as the rails will be permanently fitted to the underside of the top.
I think I’ve now come up with a solution that will involve some metal fab and welding. It is a welding forum after all
