I looked at this and I am puzzled by how the caliper heads are connected to the
earth - did you run a wire from the scale to the SiLabs board ground pin?

I'd forgotten this thread... I did eventually get my setup working fine once I'd done the negative-earth conversion! I used a short length of instrument wire out through the plastic cover of the caliper/scale to the frame of the unit to make sure it was earthed to the mill.
I can use coolant as long as it's trickled or brushed onto the part.

Mines still 3/4 done but tucked under the bench :O
I've kind of got my head round the machine scales and working with backlash, but I still intend to finish it this year at some point to get the co-ordinate machining & bolt circle stuff etc working.
