DIY tool dust extraction

Not my design but thought I'd share my tool dust extraction build for my grinder, sander etc for other folk to copy or improve for themselves.

It is a Henry vacuum cleaner connected to a cyclone mounted on a drum and then a hose to the tool. Only had 15min left tonight so quickly cut a hole in the drum lid and then screwed and siliconed in the cyclone.

Thanks, good to know.

I need to do something as when I was removing filler the other day from the rear arch with a non-woven wheel on my grinder it covered the whole place in a thick dust and I still have plenty more to do.

Hopefully have it cobbled together tonight for a go. I'm going to need to get some pipe fittings to connect it better to the vac pipes but will just tape it together tonight for a first go.

I made one almost identical to that except the cyclone was fashioned from a lonely traffic cone I "found" by the side of the road. Seems to keep the bulk of the dust in the collector rather than it ending up in the vacuum filter, did notice that the drum tended to collapse somewhat!

Where did you source the cyclone?

Hooked it up tonight, the shroud for the grinder is a bit big and with the front section removed so it doesn't get all the dust. The new Henry vacuum hose fitted in nicely after a wee filing and the hose fitted over the shroud ok after being heated with the heat gun. The extractor itself works well and most dust is collected in the drum.

Wee update, been using the dust extraction hooked up to my orbital sander to sand my caravan for painting. There’s a Hoover repair shop around the corner and the old guy gave me a couple of old hoses which I joined together as I need a long hose to do the roof. The set-up works very well and sucks in all the dust into the container rather than the hoover. It would be good to have the Hoover and Cyclone on a trolley together and is what I plan to do next.

I use an Oneida Dust Deputy cyclone with a Nilfisk wet & dry vacuum that I use for clearing out the bandsaw every once in a while - and cleaning work surfaces.

Most of my dust is from sanding when woodturning so I have an Axminster Trade dust and chip extractor with 1micron filter and a 4" hose at the lathe as that needs volume extraction. Fluid dynamics has a huge impact on the efficiency of the system; I upgraded to a much better quality 4" hose (smoother on the inside yet still flexible) and the suction and dust extraction did noticeably improve.

According to Bill Pentz you lost between a third and a tenth of efficiency using a cyclone BUT I see that as being offset by the fact that the filter and contents bag of the Nilfisk remain clear.

There’s no noticeable dust when using the extractor but if I forget to turn it on or when I’m block sanding it goes everywhere.

I have fitted one big axial fan to the workshop and one to go, a nice lazy way to get the dust out is to use my compressor hose and the fan to blow the dust outside.

I also use the Silverline FFP3 disposable masks, they fit me really well and think they are excellent.

I also have a Record Power AC400 hanging above the lathe and that has made a huge difference to the dust that settles in the workshop when I've been turning and sanding; the timer means I can just leave it set to stay on for an hour after I leave. Also have a 3M Versaflo that I wear when sanding larger items.

(I do take my dust extraction and filtering seriously; the workshops at the 50yo school I teach at have no dust extraction or filtering in the workshops, only at the two old wood lathes, so if I suffer any health issues regarding dust I can easily point the finger at Fife Council as my ass is well and truly covered at home!)

Nice unit. I was thinking of maybe fitting some extraction in the ceiling as I can’t use my wood stove with the fans on, they will pull over 10000cfm combined which is good for serious extraction but overkill for normal stuff I think.

As I've got a beard (no, I'm not a hipster despite what certain welders from Montrose might think!) I can't get away with masks - also means I have to get colleagues to empty the dust containers at work as they haven't provided me with adequate PPE!

The AC400? Yes - and Record Power's customer service has been excellent, not that it should've been needed! The cct board on the AC400 has a reputation for failing and mine has been replaced twice so far - but I did get some free filters last time!

I was just thinking a jumpy castle blower, hydroponics ducting and the fibreglass filter roll from spray paint shops.
