great, went into the man cave this afternoon and by teatime had ,managed to cobble together the old dyson cyclone complete with built in filter up to henry no.2 . cheers guys, now if i could only lay my hand on a blue drum like the one in the photos ?

Here’s mine. It gets attached to a Dyson and if you block the hose completely it will collapse the drum.

A ply box with a hinge lid would be better, and you could mount the wheels easily.

Works amazingly well though. I haven’t needed to empty the hoover since I made it.

Sawdust is fine but ash blocked the Dyson micro filter. I guess the particles need some weight for the cyclone to work but I’m no expert.

Confession time, I was going to make a cyclone from an old road cone but the above thread got me thinking '£15 for a pre made one, why not'
so I coughed for one from ebay. I cobbled it to a Workzone ash collector, I removed the air filter from inside the ash collector and blanked off the hole then removed the suction hose boss replacing it with the cyclone.
Anyway here is my bastardised Workzone cyclone and Mirka Arbranet sanding block.

And three hours worth of hand sanding.

I am not sure why but I did wonder if it would work with the cyclone mounted off centre but it would appear to though I did leave the collection bag in the wet and dry vacuum so I can not say how much dust got through only that there was no noticeable reduction in vacuum associated with the bag clogging.

No problem with normal chips from the lathe I could not resist trying, though as expected it did not like the long curly ones or the nylon birds' nest that got stuck in the cyclone.

It would be fine with metal grindings.

I've Frankensteined a broken Dyson with one of the cyclones shown (mine is a white one with the dollar symbol on the side as seen above). It's on a 30 litre metal drum because there was someone local selling a load. I use it mainly for cleaning the ash out of the wood burner and it's perfectly happy sucking up the nails and screws that used to be in the wood. I don't see any ash beyond the cyclone and wonder if it might be down to an accident of my construction........ The hose I salvaged from the Dyson isn't a perfect fit into the inlet of the cyclone so extra air gets drawn in. My first thought was that I'd seal it up but bizarrely it seems to make the cyclone faster. It might have more suck without the leak but as I say it rattles nails up the hose with no probs so I'm leaving it alone.

Industrial Henry sucks swarf easily om nom nom. And rust from needle guns. Rust is HEAVY. Random anecdote: We once filled a big Henry machine with rust dust, coukdn't lift it. Put a chain hoist on the handle, pulled the handle off the machine..little red thing sitting there smiling. We had to empty 3/4 of the rust back on deck to move it..
