Domestic air source and cold callers

I'm starting to get annoyed by people cold calling and telling me I must be elligable for free or discounted air source and solar pv. Many of our neighbours who are retired have taken the plunge, ripped out their oil boilers, had new rads fitted withe the aforementioned system. The widow opposite seemed to think the solar panels would run the system!
This morning one particularly annoying non-salesman told me I should change my mind and go for a free (massive assumption there since we are both working) heatpump system before the freebies stop and they stop the sale of boilers in 2026 - is this correct, will it be impossible to buy these after this date?
He seemed quite upset when I told him he couldn't be certain what would happen in the future...

just think about how much electric u will get on cold rainy days in winter......almost nil.......

Thanks @gaz1 , good read. So as it stands, the non sales salesperson was right, I won't be able to buy an oil boiler replacementbafter 2026, as it stands now...
But, as they say, many a slip twixt cup and lip, and who knows what will happen, maybe I will buy a spare boiler (ripped out by the non sales salesperson). Maybe, no not maybe, I will be retired thereby quallifying for someone else to pay for my power hungry heat pump. Maybe maybe, but for now, the oil boiler stays.
Interestingly, one of the prerequisites for a grant is to have cavity or other form of wall insulation - mothers house has this, top of a south facing hill, it's a disaster...

You'll still be able to buy a replacement for your existing boiler until 2035 - so no rush to buy a spare.

Lets face it though. These oil furnaces are pretty bomb proof. Most will outlive us! Parts are plentiful. The burners are very common to the point that many are interchangeable. My plumber has a stock of spare old burners.

Honestly - they’re not. Heat pumps have had a bad press due to poor experiences of early installations done to poor standards. how is getting £4 worth of energy for £1 a con?

Gas boilers banned in new properties from 2025, was 2016, then 2018 and possibly 2021 so I wouldn't be too upset

Im sure that all the information in the Telegraph and Daily Mail is well researched and accurate, however my day job is commercial scale decarbonisation

I won't bore you with the details, but on most of our contracts, if the client doesn't save money, we don't get paid. Therefore the technology must work or I wouldn't have a job.....

Anyway, hang on to your old boiler, don't get free energy from PV (I'm getting some rooftop and a battery, payback is about 6 years allowing for prices to fall, even quicker if they don't) but don't make out it's all a con when in fact, it might not be

With a 5 kWh battery, you could conceivably be off grid using a heat pump, so yes, the PV will run the heat pump at night

So electric only then? Madness.

Lets face it though. These oil furnaces are pretty bomb proof. Most will outlive us! Parts are plentiful. The burners are very common to the point that many are interchangeable. My plumber has a stock of spare old burners.

I've got a 3 year old Grand oil boiler and have been thinking of picking up a spare burner, maybe I'll look a bit harder now!

Electricity around 32p per kWh.

I don't have oil and am all electric but for heating a house at the moment oil is still cheaper for most by some margin. Plus the efficiency curve of the heat pump tends to drop off quite a bit just when you need it most and it has to start defrosting itself.

Our electricity bill is horrendous. That puts current oil prices in a better context. I have no capital to invest in solar so couldnt even if it made sense.

In my lane there are houses ranging from 75 years old (mine and a couple of others) to over 400 years old , the really old ones have solid stone walls with no chance of insulating them and some are grade 2 listed.
How the hell will a heat pump heat those buildings when they only just work on a modern cavity walled insulated house?
And even if a heat pump would work who will pay for it all?
Don't forget a lot of old people feel the cold quite badly so a house that only gets to 17° is no ****** good to them!

I'm in the same boat. Stone walls. No cavity.

Maybe two heat pumps...?

I fitted a solid fuel Rayburn instead.... must order coal and chop wood....

I'm lucky as my house has cavity walls with some form of insulation in and a lot of Kingspan / loft insulation but others? One has a massive thatched roof FFS!

same situation here old soiled filled walls no chance of a cavity and its soaked all the time

just had a row about it to be honest as i dont want the crap

you want the answer its called build a 4" composite insulated wall inside of your house the second pic the ground level is 1" below the cill on the outside

this was a grant apllied install



i dont want that crap glued to the wall and im not keen on the build the frame lets hide the whole issue and let it have air behind the insulated wall and interior wall whats the point in that

I do have 4 kW of solar pv, works very well on sunny days. Doesn't work at night (damn), doesn't work in the winter (double damn). So, these batteries, will they store enough in the summer to run my heat pump in the winter eh? Lady opposite was told it "only needed sunlight"...

My old oil which got replaced free 5 years ago was 50 years old, super reliable but probably not very efficient. So, replacements available for the next 20 years then?
That'll do me, sub 60p a litre right now, plenty of trees about here too.

Perhaps I should add I've nothing against heat pumps, fantastic things actually, but to pretend that a) the oil boiler will not be replaceable after 2025, and that b) sub 4 kW of solar will power it through the deepest dampest winter weather, is just plain lies, and to do this so that mr non salesman could get commission on his companies installation proper pees me off..
