Dragonfly on the pond

I was asked to make a child safe pond cover with a mixture of flat and 3d sculpture. Specifically for a dragonfly to sit on the top of the cover. I have been learning a bit of smithing to help with my sculpture and this is the first job using my newly learned skills. I hope I get to do more of this type of work.

Hi Windy! I was thinking of doing the november course but am not sure yet, its a bit much to find somewhere to stay for the two nights but i'm hoping I can do it.

Hi Norm Its been blast, zinc sprayed and nylon coated, I've just started getting my bits finished in nylon and am really happy with it!!

It is interesting seeing the similarities. its good fun and beats the hell out of most day jobs

Sure does. Even the boring bits and the discombobulations, the 'messed that up' moments as you chop up two hours work.

I had a chat with Barry Wood from metal crafts & he mentioned you are a really helpful guy, I use 6mm diameter bar usually to create my sculptures & I need to bend the shapes with ease. Currently I use a vise to bend everything but I need to be more productive. Barry mentioned the exel 5+ tools kit, is this something I should invest in?

You spoke to Barry at Metalcraft? a nice bloke.
The power bender is indeed a fantastic piece of kit, a bit pricy but still a bargain.

A bit about me, did engineering till the age of 30, did a MA & Ba Hons in both illustration including art & design 2000-2005
2006-2012 Worked as Dean The Art Wizard, I'm trying to create a new niche by testing the market creating functional animals for the garden i.e. plant animal sculptures.

I want to be able to bend 6mm round bar to create multitudes of shapes, what's your honest opinion & the best way to do this? Buy something from metalcrafts to do this? I currently use a vise to bend everything!

I would have thought for someone in your profession the metalcraft XL5 power bender would be the best, but that's just based on Chunko' and pondman here who have them and rate them so highly.

I believe pondman makes his dragonflies from 6mm bar but I can't be 100% sure.

I am starting to do metalwork as a hobby and I am looking at saving up for the powerbender myself, this welding/metalworking lark is starting to get expensive !!!

I suggest that Dean start a thread in Tools Materials and Techniques and we can have a rap about the Metalcraft tools. Running a bit late or I would start one myself.

Am I an Andy? nope an Alan or in some circles Chunkolini. Never ever a Chunky or a Chunks. Chunko' is ok in informal situations. With the apostrophe.

Alien/predator figures? cant stand them. Very clever but to me very ugly and factory made. I was offered the chance to be an agent for them a few years back.
The Chelsea river Gallery? did not rock my boat either. I find sculpture made of assemblies of other things rarely work for me, I think the form of the component has to be right for the new role, not just an agglomeration of random stuff.
