Drain Air from Compressor at night?

My comp must be 35 years old now and I just drain it once a week but I do now have an auto drain valve these days, worth having I reckon

I turn mine off, and ease the drain plug a turn or two wearing a glove. let pressure drop a bit, open drain screw abit,let more pressure drop, open screw bit more and so on.I turn mine off cos it will of course start up when pressure starts dropping. I remove the drain plug completely to ensure the water can flow out.
I put the the drain plug in a tin so I do not lose it. I forget where I put the tin-but I know the drain plug is not lost once I find the tin.
