Ten, twelve years ago EDF, turned up to change my houses single phase to three phase supply, 70 cm stone wall.

They had a big Makita slow corded drill, halfway through the wall, the bloke holding it, it binded, he did a near 360° spin through the room.

Reminds me of the BT bloke drilling a hole for my phoneline 20 odd years ago, he had a battery drill with 3 knackered batteries and the bit was so blunt it got hot so when he put it down it melted a hole in my carpet.

I once saw a guy drilling a 400mm hole with an old baseplate-mounted drill amd monster slow speed motor that was all held down with an acrow. The drill jammed, the stand spun out from under the acrow and the whole baseplate rig went round and round with the guy on it, winding the power lead in. It towed the big power tranformer across the floor and only stopped then it pulled the wires out.

My big Metabo core drill has an excellent clutch as well as a proper soft start

My old DeWalt had a terrible clutch, was a wrist breaker and it started ******* oil out of the gearbox when it was warm

It's a requirement nowadays. Back in the '90's Marcrist used to sell a beast of a hand held core drill with a 4 speed gearbox that just didn't stop. It was a real wrist-breaker. Mind you back then everything was built tough. Nowadays stuff goes into overload if you look at it sideways.

The Metabo gets it just right, usually 110mm holes but I have done 150's. All handheld and dry, with dust extraction

You won't drill it with an SDS.

I think Brad is a pessimist.

Can be done - but may take forever. May cost a fortune, too (not taking time into consideration, either).
