I've been into drone for the past 7 years. Built my own at first with KK 2.1 controllers but programming pids was a nightmare. Decided to buy them. From the early days of drones with no telemetry ,to the first...Flying3D's ,but I had Syma's & Hubsan's before that. Then to XK Detects ,then Parrots, so on and so forth. But unfortunately kept them all and now stuck with them. I love the Disco's , have three of them, lovely flying machines. Only been out once this year because of the weather but it's a great hobby. The drones and software/apps have got better over the years but of course more expensive. In the early days you had to put alot more input into the hobby, updating firmware and modifying things as you went along . Alot easier now, but worth the effort.

Doubt I'd be allowed to fly them where I am...I reckon I'm never more than 50 foot away from another person at any time!

First thing is figure out if you want to do cinematic or fpv,
From there can start looking at what is ideal starter drones etc.

Ive crashed all the ones my kids have had. One or two were quite expensive. I think one like this I could probably manage to fly safely

Anyone who has been into m office will have seen the big Robbe Futura hanging from the ceiling, I was into helis in a big way once. I am interested in drones of course but I just cannot be arsed with the "licensing" malarkey so I never bothered. Haven't flown the Heli in many years now and not likely to. It has a DC60 in it and that is very sought after as a collectible so I might just sell it. I don't think there is a market anymore for big helis.

The licensing didn't look particularly hard to me. A tenner every three years and an online multiple choice test. Unless I've missed something?
I was going to go for a Mavic Pro, lots of them on eBay. But the 50 metre limit would rule them out for a lot of my uses, even out here in the sticks.
The Mavic Mini and others that come in under the 250g limit look just as capable these days but, surprise surprise, a lot more expensive.
I still have a few parrots and the gps modules and had a play with arduinopilot for a while and had heli's for the kids though I haven't bothered much (at all) for a fair few years since before regulation came in, I was going to self build a big octocopter but there's a lot of stuff I wanted to make I didnt have time for...
I looked recently on the french gov drone geoportal for places permitted to fly, and they have my acre of garden here in France listed as a public space and prohibited to fly in, which I can challenge if I send in documentation although there's no address or proceedure listed to follow. So if they're like that for my space, the odds are that everywhere will just be marked as public and prohibited by default.
I asked and was told if I just fly it on my own property at a height of no more than 50 metres (the most restricted level, normally its 110 metres), I'm risking prosecution with a fine of between 15000e and 75000e and 6 months in prison until the map is officially fixed. So I wont bother.
Weirdly there's a large private lake next to me with a public road going through it, and its marked as clear for anyone to fly over including the road. So the maps a mess in general.

I got a Revell Fizz drone
so that I could pinch the propellors and motors off it to convert a toy hovercraft to radio control
I guess its really an airboat as the skirt is solid, but it looks like a hovercraft when being played with on a lake.

Anyone wishing to get into the hobby will have one heck of a choice of drones. First thing to think about is your budget. Dont spend £800 on your first drone. You might not even take to the hobby after all, you may find you dont have the time. Buy a cheap drone or a second hand one to start off. A cheap lightweight one allows you to fly in the house if the weather is bad and you cannot do much damage. You dont even need a one with a camera to start off with. Keep it low and learn to take off , forwards, backwards, left and right and land. When I started off there was no GPS so you had to coordinate both joysticks together just to keep the drone in the air, hovering was difficult but you learnt as you got more practise. Once you have the basics , then you can buy a better drone with a camera. You cannot really beat a DJI. I have a mini, great picture quality but of course there are better ones and more expensive ones. If buying a second hand one, make sure you can still buy batteries for it, or it may be supplied with 2 or three. I now cannot get batteries for many of mine as once production stops so does the support for them.
