@hotponyshoes i’m sorry, I read your post and then forgot to reply. Have you got a picture of the type of switches you mean? Sounds like an interesting solution.
I’ve got a Schneider contactor out of a pressure washer which takes 24v external inputs, so I was thinking about getting another and using them for forward and reverse via the updated dewhurst switch. Unecessarily complicated but it seems like the cheapest way as I’ve already got some of the gubbins.

That's a Schneider/Telemecanique,
You can get knock-off brands but I'd stick with the big boys as you'll stand a better chance of getting bits in 20yrs time..
That one is a 3 way, you buy all the bits individually and clip the individual contact blocks on to suit.
The bit in the middle is for panel mounting, you can also get an extension bit if you want to mount the contacts further back. Can't remember what they are called, Cabinet or enclosure mount maybe?
I don't know if they do a leaver style switch but those switches are pretty tough and I'd think you could 3d print a leaver or even drill through the plastic and bolt a bit of bar on there if you wanted

I used a photo of a 3-way as that's what I've got but obviously you could just use a 2 way if you have a separate start stop.

I ordered a switch from Aliexpress. They seem to call them 'tyre/tire changer switches'.
I have not tried it out yet but it was not too expensive at all.

Thanks for that mr ponyshoes, turns out that’s what I have so that’s good…
I think I should be able to squeeze that and a simple fwd/rev switch arrangement so I can use the classic dewhurst handle. We’ll see…

I bought it for a pillar drill if I remember correctly (Elliott Progress 3A or Meddings).
I am not sure yet if it will be required for the Elliott Omnispeed lathe. I am hoping to use some of the existing switches if possible but I have not got to the electrics side of things yet with the lathe.
In all my cases the machines will be run via VFDs so the switches will only handle the control signals. The motors will be directly wired to the VFDs without any switches in between. Therefore, the switches don't need to be 'very good' at handling high voltages or high amperage as they are only carrying the signals for the vfds (12 -24v depending on the VFD). As long as it switches it will work perfectly fine.

That drawing says use momentary switches for fwd/rev.
Might just be worth checking the vfd to make sure it will switch over on a contact rather than a bump

It is a random drawing to just illustrate that the motor is connected directly to the vfd and the control cabling to switches (no high voltages or amps through the switches).
My ABB VFDs can be set to work with momentary or 'latching' switches depending on the macro you chose.

…I was intrigued as you run your mill off a vfd, I forgot about your pillar drill exploits.
I used quite a lot of the original wiring on my little Elliott mill when I changed that to run off my vfd, I do like an old switch after all.
It took quite a bit of scribbling to get something that worked close to what I wanted and i hope I can remember what I did because since we’ve moved and everything got taken apart the teco vfd is in base block and won’t run without all the controls being reinstated!

that drawing i made was of the factory connections in my warco GH-18 mill (which when i got it new a few years ago had a wiring diagram for a single phase motor!) and it has an auto reverse and stop 'function' for tapping, you set the depth stop and when the quill is low enough for the stop nut to hit a microswitch, it switches to reverse, and when the quill reaches the top it shut off.
The VFD can be programmed to use different switching arrangements, the VFD uses 12 to 24 volt switching, so something like a dewhurst switch will last forever as it's only switching a few milliamps to signal the VFD to rotate the motor one way or the other.
There are various methods of switching,
The method is as shown in the diagram is using a momentary switch for forwards, another for stop and one more for reverse,
Another method is to use a latching switch for forwards or reverse, i.e. the type HotPonyShoes shows.
Another method is to use an on / off switch and a separate latching motor direction switch,
What you don't want to do with a VFD is switch the motor output as bad / expensive things can happen to the VFD if you do, so you need to re-wire the old switches to operate the low voltage inputs to the VFD,
There is another method where you can use a contactor to do the reversing, this is how my warco 250-VF lathe is wired up, but i really don't know why they do that, as the contactor is just switching the inputs to the VFD, i havent had the lathes electricals off yet to investigate, but i will be doing so soon to re-locate the VFD to a wall mounted box, and making my own control panel like i did on the mill :
