Drying out rods on............

An open flame,can i,no harm is there?
Reason i've got a bit of rubbish to burn not a lot just offcuts etc so i thought while the fires hot warm up some rods
On a grill mesh over the flames or might chuck em in an roasting tray place it one the embers
Be ok wont it?

I keep mine in the cupoard where the heatstore and hot water tank are. Some rods I was given by nextdoor after 5 years in a damp barn worked a treat after an hour in the arga simmering oven.

Why not try the shipyard method short the rod to earth and it heats up due to the resistance you will see the rod drying
Not too long though as the rod will go red hot
Been done with millions of rain soaked vodex

New inverter machines have antistick which stops you from being able to do this. Will work with a transformer / oil cooled though

Brads initial point of depending on the rod type is critical here.
Basic/low hydrogen rods need to be baked. Airing cupboards and radiators don’t count. They need to be baked in an oven and for best results kept warm in a welders quiver. If it’s fresh out of a vac pack you got 12 hours to use em moisture free.
You can’t just tape up the vac pack and assume that’s fine or poke them through a tiny hole either.
General purpose rutiles are not so critical. You want them to be dry and even better warm but they don’t need baking.
Moisture in a rod usually always results in start porosity. This also usually improves as you burn the rod because the rod under current burns off the moisture.

i cheat. use a damp rod on the oil cooled and stick it on the sacrificial plate on the return till the rod starts steaming and the end red and away we go

One point to make as far as sticking them in the kitchen oven maxed out for an hour or two.....
If its an electric oven then will be fine.
If its a gas oven, dont forget that burning gases (Hydro-carbons) results in moisture.

If its for diy odds and sods its not going to matter at all so would go with either for a couple of hours.
But if its for a job which joint integity is important, or welded to a procedure which asks for LowHy, then just chuck them and buy some new rods. Thats all we do at work with Lowhy rods. Whatever isnt used out of an open packet at the end of each day goes in the scrap bin, new packet each morning (filarc 56S's).
