I need to purchase one any thing to watch out for or any thing I need to go with it to make it more useful.

Oh I need it to test my pump pre lift but can see it coming in handy to check brake disc run out and well what know what else.

Get a magnetic mount for it but NOT one of the Silverline ones or any that look the same as they are crap.
The ones with the flexible shaft look quite good.
Make sure it comes in a nice box or it'll get bashed about.

Whenever I've used mine I make a stand for it if I haven't got one already. That way you build up a collection of stands.

if u can afford one get the magnetic snake mount more versatile than the solid rods . they can be a pain

Just about to go on a call out to a dead machine when i get back will post a link was looking in the msc flyer today and they have the noga style mag base and arm in their own brand where you just have one knob to turn to lock both arms. Makes life so much easier, form about £ 20.00 + vat.

Pity that, they're good clocks. Wouldn't say 45 but risk I had it 40 years. This post has got me thinking about a magnetic base as I made a bracket for it to go in the lathe toolpost. Maybe an unnecessary expense though.

Best advice I can give is get one that is suitable for your application. Brake disc runout probably needs just 1 thou resolution. No point getting a tenth indicaor because it's too sensitive and will drive you crazy trying to true something to a degree that's not necessary.

I only use one to measure the run out on discs and hubs so I opted for a cheapo off eBay, I can't knock it for the dosh.
The magnetic stand is stupidly powerful but I do sometimes struggle with the rods to get the distance to reach the surface I'm checking.
The snake arm stands would be far better for my application.

it doesn't even matter if its metric or imperial if its only getting used for run out setting stuff up in lathe or brake disks

The one-knob style of arm definitely works well. Position the DTI with one hand and clamp/un-clamp with the other.

I am setting up a fuel pump so it needs to be metric and accurate

Mr @123hotchef when you say setting up the fuel pump do you mean diesel inj pumps, if so it may pay to get a small diameter dti. I have the sykes set and when that lot is screwed into the back of the pump there is very little room, the bigger one on the left of the pic below would be useless.
