Dumb newbie needs help with a compressor

It works well now. But it's a bit loud. I think it needs a good service and clean.

Good. They are noisy, mine came with a warning to wear ear defenders if working close to it. I've seen people fit a car silencer to the air intake of compressors, though if you do get a brand new one, wouldn't do to suck a load of soot into the pump.

Make sure the opil level is correct.

If its any help, I wouldnt want to be in the same room as mine for extended periods. .
Intake silencing helps a lot, I have a big v twin unit that is very significantly louder without its air filter. I was going to try a airbox off a range rover when I get around to it...
