Ear Defenders - How often do you use them?

I used to use ear defenders with my Dyson and its 1800W motor. There's a reason they suck a lot
Its just more comfortable when using the grinder also. I have a pair of 3m ones which wrap around the back of the back of the head and they fit under a face shield.

I have damaged hearing, from being daft shooting and working in the past. Try and look after what I have left now if only I could find where I left my memory........

Yep, not from shooting, but from working, and hobby power tool use, routers, circular saws etc....

Mid range hearing the worst affected I think. If i stand at a reasonably busy bar (think cider, not ballet ) I find it difficult to have a conversation, the voices just seem to jumble up with people nearby.

We had a noise level assessment at work a while ago, turned out we should be using hearing protection because of the volume of the radio alone

If its a quiet day, I don't bother, but if i'm grinding or someone close by is, I tend to wear plugs, if its a particularly noisey job ill use plugs and defenders together.
One of the noisiest things in the workshop is probably the rage saw we use for cutting open mesh flooring.

The guy in the workshop opposite me uses one for cutting 12mm plate, i can hear it in my workshop across the car park.

As a shooter my hearing has suffered badly. I now wear electronic muffs, wish I had them 30 years ago. Any loud noise now sets off my tinnitus. once you notice it going it's to late the damage is done, look after you hearing. Once it's gone it's gone

I wear earplugs all the time at the workshop. I get to the workshop and put them in.

I'm glad when I first started shooting, the club insisted ear defenders were mandatory, eye protection was also advised. I nearly started wearing a hard hat the day I was range officer when someone was putting full factory loads through a snubby .44 mag and the muzzle blast bought the fluorescent tube over the firing point down!

I tend to pretty much always wear them in the workshop if I've got a grinder or circular saw out. And a must when shooting clays, although I've started using the custom molds that we got from work for that as well as work because they are far more unobtrusive.

There are still deer stalkers out there that won't wear protection, they want to hear what's going on round about them. Won't last long!

Always, even though its too late and I have Tinnitus and High Tone deafness. We were issued ear plugs too late in my case, they were issued for range work, but then it was realised that the noise inside the aircraft was causing hearing damage as well - so again started pluggin up too late, then chuck in motorcycling.
There were no earplugs when I was an apprentice and we sometimes belted RSJs/Steel plates with sledgehammers.
I'm ok with my tinnitus, other sufferers can find theirs intrusive, High Tone deafness not really an issue -I can still hear a smoke alarm etc and don't need Morse Code.
So yeah, plug the lugs everytime.

A deer rifle burns five times or greater the powder load! Thing is me and the wife together are OK she hears what I can't and I hear what she can't as regards audible range, not sure it's a great advantage to hear each other 100% of the time .

Well said about the mask I do so also. Metallic dust can't be good for lungs

I used to buy musicians earplugs-they are supposed to knock out most of the damagin decibels but still allow for hearing the repeaters or whatever they call em.
If you stood around 30 metres in front of Motorhead, you could feel the base whacks on your chest never mind the decibels.

I used to use them all the time I was on the tarmac at Heathrow but when Concorde took off on full reheat it made little difference. Used to make the buildings, my fillings and all shake! I once had a todo with a stewardess when I was tasked with unblocking a rear toilet at the rear. Passengers where boarding, the trolley dollies were prepping the trollies for service and I had all my winter clothes on plus the ear defenders. I found if I took them off then in the hurry of working and finishing up and having to get off the plane before the door shut I could leave them or my radio behind so left them on. This snobby stewardess started mouthing off to her mates that I was ignoring her and how rude I was. She soon shut up when I told her as I left that I could here her every word and if she wanted to put in "a voyage report" ( it was a system where the flight crew could complain about us but we had no similar system) then beware as that was about to change. Instead of allowing us to complain the whole system was abandoned! But now unless I am doing something for a while, like using a chainsaw or the like I don't bother. I am 68 and can still here a pin drop!

for my age my hearing is still powerful though that could be due to other reasons as well wearing glasses all my life

i had the noisy walkman and also ive hacked digital units to higher the sound from them ive still got the ipod and its loud they can ring after these episodes

i did the night clubs and also the pubs for 3 days a week

grinding work ive used a grinder often over the years normally on building sites that does get them ringing a bit but cutting metal gets them really ringing and using a steel grinding disk really gets them ringing

as some people have found out i have really good hearing its high pitched that hurts my ears

Yeah I use ear defenders with any machinery chainsaw , brushcutter, rotivator , grinders ... these days ... I think I was a bit laid back about it in the past ...I have a bit of tinnitus when there is no background noise ,but my hearing is still good ...jeff

I find loud sharp noises, especially hammering almost painful and very unpleasant so I tend to reach for the Peltor ear defenders I've had for the last ten years for almost anything noisy. More often than I grab my safety glasses that's for sure, but that's probably why I've visited the eye hospital more than I've been to a dentist in the last decade!
