I've got 2 Esab helmets and neither darkened, though my Esab New Tech one would darken if you covered 1 sensor. My Origo Tech one wouldn't darken at all though.
Don't be stupid this is the UK, the cloud cover does it for you, just went a bit darker in London then brighten up again, haven't seen the old current bun for days now...
we had very little cloud up here in Scotland. At one poin there was a little bit of cloud just in front of the sun, enough to see the eclipse clearly though
Got to the workshop as it was finishing, so couldn't try my welding mask
Saw just a glimpse of it up here. It went quite dark. Then a cold wind got up. The birds stopped singing.
I was expecting a Jehovah's Witness to turn up any moment telling me to repent....
My auto mask wouldn't darken today for the eclipse yet it has darkened before in sunlight! The flourescant tube over the bench will also darken it (that's how I test it).
Luckily I had a couple of fixed shade glass lenses, a 12 & a 10. The 10 wasn't quite dark enough but the 12 was perfect.
My speedglas didn't auto darken but I have the 9100XX and it has s manual darken function so with that it worked fantastically. We had a perfect, cloud free view in Stoke on Trent
My auto helmet glass darkened first time but on a couple of subsequent ones didn't till I covered the sensor area with a bit of thick rubber sheet and took it off.
On the times it did not darken fully it kind of flickered between dark and green this led me to take the protective cover off the sensor and viewing glass & used an optical wipe to get it super clean and also used a damped on a wipe cotton bud to wipe the two tiny sensors either side of the main sensor . It didn't make any difference , but as the mask is almost 24 years old I guess it might be about time to get a new one.
