Just wondering if it would be better for my compressor to run off something like a 16 amp supply,or whatever,as at the moment its just plugs into the mains.do you reckon that's why its slow to build up pressure,and after a certain point struggles to gain any more.

that wont have anything to do with it being plugged in to a 13 amp socket if it required a 16 amp supply it would pop the 13 amp fuse on startup . starting current on a 3 hp motor is about 50 amps for a few seconds and running full load amps would be no more than 12 amps

Its an old ingy rand 3 HP 200lt belt driven thing from around the 1950's so I've been told anyway.it was what they used in the brewery's in those days.as for cut off pressure,I have no idea how its set,as I know little about how it works,and a bit weary of messing.

has it got a pressure gauge fitted and are the belts tight enough and not slipping. run it up to max pressure and it will or should cut out note the pressure, let some air out and see what pressure it cuts back in at ,i would have thought cutout at 120 ish and back in at 90 near enough

Gasket Problem

machine slow to build up pressure and then struggles to fill to cut out point , sounds like a head gasket .( if its not a loose pipe that delivers air from pump to tank)

Depends what you mean by struggles. If the motor slows down and labours then it's unlikely to be a leak.

If it just seems to take too long then it could be a leak.

Machine from the 50's. Probably made with proper thickness metal for the tank - I think about 200psi was a more normal cut-out pressure then?

Yeah it has a gauge fitted,but never took any notice of it to be honest.one thing I have noticed though is when the pressure is near the point of Max,it vents air from the small hole in the top of the regulator,bit it you wind it back in or out can't remember which way nowit stops.also is it true these don't kick out much cfm?.

Does the gauge come before or after the regulator?

You usually get air from that hole when the pressure on the reg. outlet is greater than the set pressure. If it happens when the inlet pressure is greater than or equal to the outlet pressure it points to a duff regulator.

Miggymarky you are being a bit too economical with your info for anyone to give you a possible cause for your problem, can you put up a pic of the compressor or even the model No of the pump. How long does it take to build up pressure to its cut off pressure. What is that cut off pressure.

the venting of air may be from the safety blow off valve. as said above more info and pic needed

He says the air is venting from the regulator, perhaps he means the pressure switch?

Sorry folks for being a bit vague with the info,but switched it on today and let it build up pressure.it did eventually cut off at 120psi and cut back in at just over 80psi,but it did take a good 25 mins to get there,so reckoning this ain't right.as for the model of it,there is no plates on it anywhere or numbers,I have searched everywhere,but then again there is a few layers of paint.if I remember correctly I think I posted a PIC of it in one of my first posts if its any help.Thanks.

It may be a home made effort, 120 psi may be a bit high for the motor. I set my Clarke to 100 psi as it seemed to labour at anything higher from new.

those pumps were quite common used in pub cellars.there not a verry large cfm ,a compression test on the pump would be ideal see if theres low pressure due to wear
