Engine Block Painting Help

Hi all
I currently have my engine out, cleaned, blasted ect and ready for paint.

I am looking into a good paint to use, I of course know the POR 15 Engine enamel however it is very expensive especially when I would like to use 2 colours on the engine and on top of that I will need the POR metal prep.

I was just wondering if there are any other brush on alternatives I could be looking at that will give good, long results

Epoxy primer followed by 2 pack brushed on. This is epoxy followed by metallic blue basecoat and lacquer, brushed on.

Ive had good luck with a decent red oxide primer and tractor enamal.........mind that was on a Diesel eng, might get dicoloured around the exhaust ports......
I'd still go that route if it were just for me tho.......

Used good old fashioned engine enamel on my 34 car, seems durable.

ive always just used a decent metal paint. Its about the only thing hammerite is good at.

2k etch primer and coat with smoothrite enamel I done my engine block with it and also the barrels on my Norton donkeys years ago and its heatproof

I use VHT engine enamels , cant say they are the best but they do last. Never tried any of the others.

You may find it difficult to get decent adhesion to the alloy if it’s been sat for any length of time. Main issue being the surface of the material oxidising.

Quite so. Comes back to epoxy!

Check the data sheet, don't think epoxies like that kind of heat.

In theory nothing but VHT does! However, the block only gets to 90C or thereabouts, so well within the ability to cope even if not officially rated as such. I have yet to see any epoxy or two pack burnt off except around the exhaust ports where the lacquer goes a bit brown.

Ooh, an Essex. Question time, what is the water outlet for on the back of the water pump for? I assume the two blue hoses are heater, but that third one baffles me.

I have an Essex in my t bucket.

You've obviously spent a lot of time & money on the engine, why risk spoiling the job, go with the POR15.

if its an ally block just undercoat with 2k etch primer that's what it was designed for . paint with smoothrite enamel its rated up to 600c
