Why would you need a reference?
I just scribe a line, flip the square over and check against the line.
Not the most accurate for precision machining.

That's why it's good enough for me.Not the most accurate for precision machining.
Msc (I think it was) were doing a set of 5 last year, very cheap too. Very good quality for very little money.
....more likely he will be checking his Pallets are square so he can load more of them in his trucksYou've all forgotten that @fizzy just wants the tool because it's a tool and he has a tool collecting problem.
I'll be blown away if it's not used for anything other than checking the square is square
That's only as accurate as the edge of the surface you're scribing on is flat. Good enough against guillotined edges I suppose. Why would you need a reference?

@fizzy does not have problem its a serious interest in Quality , I have seen his lathes ,his triumph that he uses owned for something like thirty years , and a more helpfull bloke you wont find , especially when it comes to moving a bit of kit you have bought , as for using stuff when you work 6days a week all hours actually finding time to wind down, relax and enjoy your passion is difficult. especially when you have a wife and family to fit in .You've all forgotten that @fizzy just wants the tool because it's a tool and he has a tool collecting problem.

I have a lovely old mint condition M+W combination set - really high quality - acquired it with a load of other stuff - very lucky find!
Starrett combination set on amazon as cheap as anywhere I've seen them recently... (Starrett were selling an imperial only version for £65 on their ebay shop a few years back!)
Did you mean this type, or just a plain engineers square - I couldn't work it out as you started talking about rulers
Ah ok, ignore the above then!! I got a set of SPI ones from msc a few years ago, they were cheap enough in their advantage deals flyer. Nothing particularly special, obviously Far Eastern in origin and a bit rough around the edges (but then they weren’t mitutoyo prices) but they seem accurate enough for my use.I have a lovely old mint condition M+W combination set - really high quality - acquired it with a load of other stuff - very lucky find!
No normal engineers squares - just be handy to have a ruler on them.
They are a nice set. I got a couple of them to try when I was dissatisfied with the M&W combis, they're pretty much as nicely made as current M&W, but far better value.

My old M+W set is too nice to use - quality is outstanding - I shudder to think how much they would be now. And I didn't even pay for themThey are a nice set. Not sure where that symbol came fromI know this is an old thread, new to the forum and just going through some.
I have an old M&W and I love it. But mostly I use the Kennedy ones for day to day work.
@fizzy sounds like you have a reputation for collecting lathes I too seem to keep buying more and have no more space
