Apparently a gudgeon pin works well as a cylindrical square.Using a cylindrical square on a surface plate any conventional square can easily be checked against it by shining a torch at where they touch and observing any gap top or bottom.
. . . not got a cylindrical square? one can easily be made to a fair degree of acuracy by turning a concave face on a fat steel bar - preferably a ground bar but bright drawn is remarkably well made these days!
