I've got the Lincoln viking helmet and I can honestly say it's improved my welding moving from a 50 quid small viewing area helmet to this one.
Richard has it above in post 34, they will pick up on your eyesight limitations and tell you what you need - that's the main point of an eye test, alongside checking their health. If your optician doesn't tell you what you need and why, find a better one. Personally I avoid anywhere such as Specsavers and find an old boy on a side street who's been doing it a lifetime and actually knows his stuff, rather than passing a test then being let loose.
I don't see what difference there is between welding and other close up work. And I know people do use varifocals to weld.
I see comments that the miller headgear is flimsy, I assume the comments are based on simply looking at it as I've had miller lids for years and never had any problems, they are the most comfortable I've used.
The thing with glasses or cheaters, they have to suit the distance that you will be using them at. Reading distance is normally reckoned to be 14" I wear 2.5 diopter for reading glasses but for the computer i only need 2.0 diopter as i view the screen at 24" Do a quick test at a £1-00 shop with their glasses at your normal welding distance.
Well if your that concerned don't buy expensive lids. No point looking at the new speedglas if it isn't gonna benefit you.Yes exactly, but my point was that the optical quality of a cheap Chinese cheater lens, means even with very costly helmets, the view isnt going to be a lot different to a £50 helmet, as the poor optics of the cheater will affect both helmets in exactly the same way.
Notice that no one who actually owns a Miller helmet, has had any problems with "flimsy" head gear? Most comfortable I have ever used also, and guess if everyone has exactly the same shape head, the old style O-U head gear will work fine................trouble is everyones head isnt the same shape.
If your referring to comments I've made steve I wasn't "bashing" miller lids. Just made an observation based on how the head gear looks very harmless comment and wouldn't bother me personally.Chris in my opinion some people on here like to bash certain brands, like R-Tec etc etc, they probably havnt even tried them !!! I havnt a clue why ??? It must be a forum thing ?
I use mostly Miller and CK stuff as I find it suits my usage perfectly, I've tried most of the others and still find miller stuff top quality , I personally would never use a cheap lid as my eyes are important to me.

Yes thats the case certainly. I get the feeling that this has got a lot to do with the power of advertising though, with many people feeling that pointless features are a must have, and that YT "reviews" are wholly objective? However I have also noticed that objectivity often doesnt go down very well, if its not in accord with the consensus view on certain subjects.
Maybe the views of someone who has bought a product with their own money, and used it over a period of several months, are of more value that those of someone who has swallowed advertising blurb from a rival manufacturer, or has watched a YT review from someone who is either paid or receives equipment FOC?
It's falling on deaf ears dale. I've given up. I share an open opinion based only on how something appears and quite happy to be corrected by users/owners and the defence and tears come out. We all make assumption and comparison on visual appearence and as long as we are prepared to listen to people and be corrected on things that appear but might not be so then it could be a sensible discussion. I'll give anything a try and keep an open mind but I'll also say it as I see it. The elite lid in question was one on my short list and I expressed concern on the way the head gear looks. It appears my concerns are not accurate which is fine but it's just an object and not a reason to get worked up over. The thing with reviews is, if you've splashed out your hard earned cash are you likely to tell everyone you've bought a lemon? As said, people who do buy gear a lot of the time don't have anything to compare it to either.....
So, take your pick - all reviews are going to have some bias in.
