Spot on with the heads up on ailments Billy. I've had a few run-ins over the years with regards to extraction. I've even walked in some instances, lifes too short to be breathing in the muck given off in fume/grinding ect.

Archie, there are some really good airfed helmets available on the market, certainly a lot cheaper than the first one I was issued many years ago "Racal" new filter fitted in the morn, pure white, removed at end of day, horrible brown stuff!! Only problem with the airfeds are, if some rotten so & so was on the curries the night before, I think you can imagine the rest??? Also good for protection when grinding.

Possibly look into an airfed and, there are extractors available that clip to torch head, obviously shielding gas has to be watched for good weld pool coverage. Try a google and see what pops up?

maybe weldequipe has info with regards to your questions of extraction?

Your right on there Runnach, some people welding now are totally unaware of the consequences of unsafe welding practices but some hard lessons have been learned in the past through ignorance and there's no room for complacency with your health.
Thanks for bringing this up Archie, sometimes you just assume that everyone knows what they are doing.

Sometimes portable extraction units such as Nederman or Plymovent units go for a song on ebay....

Untill such time, Id be inclined to invest in a box of good disposables.....

I have a couple of these that extract to the outside, ideal for winter when all the doors are shut, cost me zero also....can be picked up ex poultry pig units etc etc, often as scrap....

Haha! If I got an air fed I can assure you no one else is going near it!

Well it sounds as though there may be a fair few noxious fumes wafting round the barn then (some of them might have something to do with curry !

Thanks for all the responses. I think I'll keep an eye out for either a fan of some kind or an air-fed. I'm not a great fan of the disposables. You never know, I might be able to persuade the farm to contribute! H&S playing to my advantage for the first time ever!

I have one of those fans similar to what snowcat posted. They are available in home improvement sores as gable fans.

They are not that expensive, I seem to recall it was $50US.

They have thermostats, could be useful in the summer up high in a barn to get rid of hot air.

Has anyone had any experience using one of the torch extractors that Runnach mentions? There's a Parweld and a Binzel model that both have extraction built in around the shroud. Seems like a really good idea if it works! Wouldn't have to worry about the placement of extractor arms etc. I'd be worried that it'd be really heavy (though my MB36 isn't light anyway!) and that it'd be impossible to use in corners. I'll put the links up in case anyone else is interested.
