My "best" of many experiences with getting steel out of my eye, many years ago, was when I turned up at the local A&E when there had just been a rotation (new cohort of junior doctors let loose on their first day) and the school boy decided to have a go at removing the splinter.
After many attempts he decided it was all good.
I ended up doing to the emergency eye clinic in the Royal and the doctor there asked who had been messing on my eye, (I'm paraphrasing here, he was quite forthright, but this is a family forum) when I told him it was the NHS's finest he kept quiet but said never go to the normal A&E go straight to the the eye casualty.
Took weeks for that eye to clear up.
I haven't been to get anything out of my eyes for years.
