Cheers Kieth that's the post I'm looking for I didn't think about the boxfords. A big point I should of mentioned from the start is it needs to be single phase.A Harrison or similar is a big machine 600kg plus which you dont have the space for, myford is too wee & too expensive. So i would be looking at a Boxford or similar, only a couple of inches longer than a myford & with a big capacity for its size. You should get one for the budget. Dont discount more obscure makes, there was a Boley on home workshop a few weeks ago going cheap & they have a build quality in a league of their own.
Id agree on the colchester bantam, a good machine, and that one is sensibly priced. If you want slightly smaller look at the little boxfords an aud is the one, there are various models. Some very basic others like the aud that have the norton screw cutting gear box, and a poweed cross feed.
A harriosn m250 isnt a bad small machine either. The harrison l5 too. Or you could look at some of the imported stuff, from warco etc, good value on the used market, and arnt as bad as the purists make out. You also usually get all the extras that cost a fortune to buy separatly.
Theres various auds on the bay of evil, but this caught my eye.

I think I'm struggling to get the point over.
A big lathe simply won't fit.
Physically won't fit .
If your telling me I can't turn Alu,steel, brass and copper down on a smaller machine then
there is no point in me buying one.
Telling me to use or get a big lathe doesn't help me as I made clear in the 1st post.
Are the smaller machines no good for my needs.
Id rather your bantum. If I was Richard I would be all over that one. Even if it meant modifying my work space to accommodate the long bed,
I would be a bit careful with anything that came out of a school or college, they tend to get a lot of abuse
Nice. Thanks for the help.To an extent no its not going to be worth your while
Ok. I think we need to talk pete.My Bantam is single phase with a brand new VFD fitted. Speeds from 3prm to 1600.
WHOAHHHHHH. Ok we really need to talk. And it's only 1.3mt. I'm gonna go get my tape out now.No mate it's just a normal 3 pin plug.
