I use Filarc 56 as my lo-hi rod, they're 7016 and I love em. Find them very easy to control compared with some 7018's that I used a while back. A nice rod.

Everyone else has covered the details here, treat them like 7018's and you can't really go wrong.

Update on the 7016's..........gave 'em a try, but I couldn't really get on with 'em. Seemed a bit too aggresive, even with the amps down.

Went back to my 7018's, no more probs.

Two good welding days, sunburn on the back of the neck, arcburn under the chin, knees killin' me..........but did I burn some rods...

I'm not throwing the others out, I'll give them a try on something else.
I started blowing holes thro' the root (ok, could have been my naff fit up) but then I used 7018's with no probs, including welding the holes up............so dunno

Plenty more to do, so I can put your rods to the test, cheers JB...

Mike at DIYwelding, kindly sent me some sample 7016 rods, an' I've finally had chance to try them. OK, only been tacking 6mm plate, but used vertically up, they were very nice rods. Excellent penetration, glass hard flux which released as soon as it was chipped. I purposely made the tacks longer than normal, to check the control. Used a simple "fast across the middle, pause at the shoulders (vee). I could control the weld and at no time did the keyhole get out of hand.
If the price is ok, I will be ordering a full pack, for a more in depth test.

7016 acording to my old fos bible are for high sulphur and high carbon steels that crack under weld deposit.

Don’t know how old that book is but it’s kinda right.

Basic electrodes were developed to weld steels that had a tendency to cold crack due to hydrogen induced from moisture in the flux of regular rods.

Sulphur is all but eliminated in modern steelmaking, so that’s no longer an issue.

Low Alloy and Carbon steels do have a more susceptible microstructure. Removing moisture from the rod reduces diffused hydrogen in the deposited weld metal.

A 7016 is basically a 7018 without the iron powder in the coating. If you look at the deposition rates you’ll see a 7018 is about >120% in regard to the core wire whereas a 7016 is about <105%.

It’s why you tend to find a 7016 is better for positional welding.

In my first diagram you see we’ve got a high chance of cracking, this would be true if welding some low alloy or RQT steel which is high strength and can become very hard in areas of the HAZ.
If using a rutile electrode like a 6013, you’ve got nice soft ductile weld metal but around 15-35ml of H2 per 100g of weld metal. Hence a high chance of cold cracking (hydrogen cracks).

In the second diagram we’ve switched to a hydrogen controlled basic electrode which is classified ISO 2560: H5.
Much lower chance of hydrogen cracking without changing anything else.
