file transfer for dummies

now then, one for the IT savvy....

have a 100 meg file to send, obviously way too big for email. I know there's plenty of file transfer sites, but which one is easiest for an non IT muppet like me... simple to use please, and one that doesn't need an account to use it preferably...

what do those that do it regularly use? did I mention simple to use? any recommendations based on experience?

We use Box at work but not all customers can access that.

I'm the same, always wary of these thing, due to lack of knowledge probably, but it's probably time to move into the 20th century, then we'll maybe hae a crack at the 21st later...

Got a Gmail or Microsoft account.

Google drive share or one drive share

Drop box etc

will have a look at that, but not sure how to do that to an external person. Internally on my network, I can transfer between machines, but to do it via the google drive, which I've never used so far...? Will have to have a look into that one....

As above, google drive is very easy and you already have one if you have a google account.

Go to https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive

Click on "+New", top / left, and select "file upload"

Once the file has uploaded, click on it once and a new set of options appears on the right hand side, click on the

button

In the sharing form either enter another google mail address if you want to share it with one specific user who has a gmail account, or click "get link" to share it with anyone who doesn't have a gmail account:

Note that the link is "security by obscurity" - nobody will be able to guess it, but if the person you send it to shares it then anyone who gets that link will be able to download the file.

aye it's the last line that bothers me with this sort of thing, doesn't seem that secure , not important in this case, it's only a technical document, but I'm a bit wary of this, the joys of being an old untrusting dinosaur I suppose..


anyway, think we have it sorted with wetransfer, was discusing it at dinner time, and my eldest knows how to do it apparently, so we'll give that a bash first.

wondered that, but would the access to the folder still exist which could give access to others??? like I said, its maybe just the lack of knowledge on my part, but I have no confidence in these things.....

aye, that's an option, this ones no problem, just technical detail, more a general security thing... like I say I know very little (ok nothing) about all this IT malarky....

Thing to remember really is once the file has left your computer/ network in any form then it is uncontrollable forevermore

Remember that you can secure it to only be opened by a specific google mail user - the obscure link option is only when the recipient does not have, or will not create, a gmail account (or if you want to make it genuinely available to all)

ah ok, that sounds better....probably why I stick to nuts and bolts type jobs, they make more sense to me than this IT stuff......ahahahahaha
