Not sure who to blame for this one @keithski122 or @optima21 either way I couldn't resist and I bought a few needle files coz they were cheap!

Then a quick blat on Sketchup because I want a holder that keeps them in one place, I can see the shape of the file, quick and easy to load and they don't fall out

...a few moments later.

And I'll be damned it works first time. By which I mean it performs exactly as I had hoped.

Handy for all sorts of reasons with 3d printing but primarily because I am a sucker for a cheap deal and for a pound...


For more serious work, I have an excellent set of Stubs needle files which ironically, came in their own wallet.

Another day, another box of files.

This time a simple box with a simple print in place hinge.

I bought some cheapo "diamond" files which came in packaging rather than any sort of storage. I wanted easy access, to be able to see the type of tip when stored and compact shape. I think I nailed it....

And because it's print in place, the outsides are a very pretty PEI flavour.

I am now struggling to resist some tweaking to the desgn which frankly, worked on the first attempt!

Because I only need one box and the prototype can't be easily repurposed to suit any other application. Next one will be even better though. I rather think I am getting quite good at this.

Print in place means the mechanism is printed in its entirety all in one go. You can print a fully unctioning ball bearing for example complete with balls inside the shell. It is a feature of FDM printing many people do not fully appreciate. So that hinge doesn't come apart (I hope) but is printed fully assembled with captive pins.

PEI is a style of bed which is pattered with a subtle almost "camo" style texture. The result being the patytern transfers to the mirror smooth finished part. If you look at the second photo above the pattern is clearly visible.

<edit> in the second screenshot of the Sketchup model, I have separated the two halves of the hinge so you can see the insides. When I send the model to the pinter, the hinges are reconnected so that they are "in place', in reality, separated by about 0.2mm in this example.
