Yeah I got them from eBay , I’m sure they were sold from an actual welding company wholesaler , they have all the necessary badging etc. yeah I do know a few I will see if I can get an hours lesson. This piece wasn’t my actual test piece just so you know. Unfortunately test piece doesn’t look as nice. So with the test is it really down to me to be choosing the amps/volts or is that a preset thing by the inspector you have to abide by?

Get used to it, on some jobs you can be asked to perform a test piece even if you have a ticket.

An oil cooled welder is likely to be an A.C. machine. Miller is probably a D.C, machine. What is your £200 welder? If you are using the oil cooled set then you will need to use the high OCV terminal for your 7018 rod.

I disagree, cheap welders always give an uncertainty. I've had cheap units suddenly go bad from ESAB, Parweld, IFL, and RTech. You know what all have in common, made in china. And they all started suffering from what felt like lack of power.
My Lorch i've had for years. my old fronius produced quality until the day a board finally died.
Little Miller 160 has always been quality too.
You get what you pay for.
My advise to the OP would be find a good local welder with the tickets currently. This will give you time to work on getting things right. Don't keep throwing money at the problem.
I've held in the past 3G Low Hydrogen 7018 and 5F Vodex 6013 & 7018 certs.
Always use quality electrodes - start as you mean to go on. Bohler, Oerlikon, Lincoln, ESAB.
I've got some 100 cleats to weld to these beams in the coming week. All 7018 - Oerlikon Supercito 7018s. Bit spattery in my opinion but burn in well.
All done with 160A lorch.

I would not feel confident in a cheap welder for code tests either.
There's a reason why fronius, lorch, kemppi etc their little DC inverter units cost so much.... Cos they make predictable, xray quality welds over and over. The arc characteristics make life easy.

You have to polish it good. The shinier the better. A unpolished saw cut doesn't show enough detail.

It's the phosphoric acid in the rust remover that does the trick. Not as fast as hydrochloric acid, but available over the counter.
Yeah seeing brad93 for some tuition would be spot on if he’s game , cash or beers for a trade ? Just found out today I had my bloody welder set on 60 amps ! Going to have a play later today or tomorrow at 80 amps or so and see how I get on. I will upload some pics for you guys to pick apart.
I am going to get a new arc welder at some point , I have a technical arc mug welder and really like it. Company is spot on to deal with. Tempted to look at their arc welder range as I want to have one at least capable of doing 250 amps. What do you guys think on Tec arc ?

Why do you want so many amps for what your doing. Its not like your going to be running 5mm rods building bridges or other huge structures.
I love my tec arc mig, youll get lovers and haters here….for portable generator friendly stick Id be looking elsewhere, at one of the premium brands mentioned above, or perhaps EWM.
Well my thinking is at least if I get a high amp arc welder it’s going to cover me for anything I want to weld for the rest of my working life. In all fairness though it looks like you can get a good little miller or kempi for a really reasonable price.

That’s a shame , well for an arc I will be looking to spend around the £500 region so maybe I will have to get a lower amperage machine. Also what would your opinion be on the above weld image , the second one was my first go , top one was second.

That first one looks good. But only cut and etch will tell you if you've got full penetration.
There are a lot of decent stick welding inverters out there these days. Even midrange ones are pretty darn good.
For the best.... (and it's just opinion)
These below are the inverters, that to me, are at the top end of small stick welding. They all behave like a much bigger machine. They make stick welding sooo easy. They're all rolls royce machines. There are others, but these are the ones I've tried.
