i know mma can be forgiving but i would spend a bit of time cleaning up that metal, looks a bit manky. always weld away from the earth if you can, and if you can rap the earth lead around the leg of your welding table a few times, i find these things help keep a stable arc.

ye the metal has paint , concrete on it, im keeping it on for practice for real life situations, so if i do weld clean metal, i should be good!

had another try today with 2.5s and the only way i can do it is to have the rod pointing opposite to the direction of travel, and just hold it against the edge, the rod burns away itself at its own rate and the welds are perfect underneath, is it ok to do it this way?

Is this what you mean BJ, touch welding is a good way of using an e6013, run them at the higher end of the current range and let the arc form a cup in the end of the flux, that'll set your arc length, get it right and you'll soon be making extreme peelers, like this.

its like the first pic but probably more like 20 degrees, i just push against it towards the fillet and let it go at its own pace if you know what i mean

i can see where your coming from, but concrete!! to be honest half the battle about getting a good weld is your prep. cleaning, fitup etc. unless your doing an emergency repair some where your going to have to do these things. even the fumes coming of that steel would make it very difficult for even the most hardend of welders to put down a decent weld. steady breathing is utmost when welding, a lot of people tend to hold there breath.

For fillet welding the best rods to use are Iron Powder (E7024). I doubt you will get 2.5s but 3.2mm are available.
They put down very nice beads very easily, just let them burn.

To run a 3.2mm though you will need 160 amps (ish)
