oxy now that takes me back, loved it one of my favourites, ahhh days gone by, tigpaul you knows your onions! it forces slow travel cos it you dont it doesnt work.

.....looking at the weld pool is realtivly pointless(compleatly pointless on verticals/overheads), the things to concentrate on are motion, lead angle, work angle, travel speed, simple.. all your see by looking at the pool is slag forming, A fast fill rod could form a 1/8" slag....Concentrate on the 4 parimiters above and you welds will become flawless....This is Real welding were talking here
Aren't we forgetting the arc length here? I know, sometimes it is difficult to see the weld pool, but I get quite decent results focusing on it. When I can not see the weld pool I focus on my ears. WHAT?!? did he say ears? Yes...., ears. When I can't see the pool and arc length, I go on robot mode and keep the parameters Snowcat mentions fixed (i.e constant angle and speed). The arc length I adjust by listening to the sound that the arc makes. When it starts hissing and spitting the arc is to long, and when it gets too quiet, it is getting too short.

thanks for all the advice, have now aquired some thicker offcuts and shall be gettin some smaller rods tomorrow, now just have to sort out somewhere half decent to work
how much should i expect to pay for a box of 2.4 rods??

Depends what you buy, I just bought a carton, thats 3 boxes of 250, Murex branded E6013 general purpose electrodes for £38, plus vat. but I am a trade buyer, go to a trade supplier most will serve you, avoid the retail sellerswow guys this thread has been busy

Many welding reps will slag off (no pun intended) 'white box rods' - but I find the Murex white box 6013's are as good as any for general purpose. I've just passed a 6G pipe test using them for for fill and cap with a Nu5 root. Beware of fakes though. W/A
