Fish Eyes in Paint

I always insist this is the last time - I hate painting. Takes too long. The real answer is probably not to share the workshop with anyone else, but I'm not sure how to do that without losing a friend.

Probably possible to do something with plastic sheets, but I'd worry about static electricity and sparks.

With - filtered lamina air flow, semi parabolic glare free lighting, catalytic heating, wet floor exhaust system, both air & airless paint supply units, and operator BA supply.

What's the stuff called or who sells it? Google was not my friend on this, and I've always been concerned about sparks from plastic sheets so haven't used them up until now.

I'd love a paint booth but am trying to avoid spending any money at all right now. Besides if you are happy to sand out the flies you don't really need one. I've been writing down what I know about painting, but it's not a lot. May make it's way onto the net later in the year to help beginners get to where I am.

wd40 is a no,no. when painting,it get airborn and settles every where.
as said hands,sweat,ant thing just about can give you problems.
wash down hot water,i mean hot as you can bear it.dry it then panel wipe.
and dry panelwipe,dont just let it evaporate off.
there is a anti-fisheye get it from car refinishing supplier.

I have a bad case of painter's block at the moment. I've been putting it off and doing everything else instead. Even nearly did my taxes.

All I need to do is go out and spend an hour or two washing the damned thing (will give really hot water a try) and if the paint goes on tomorrow that's it finished and done with. If not there's always the anti-silicone additive. Will go out and wash it right now.

Nu-Agane is my local. Though they are selling more on the internet these days, and the experienced guys (and lady) that used to be behind the counter are often occupied in the back room. They've taken on a couple of less experienced employees to staff the counter and it occasionally takes a couple of trips to convince them than anything out of the ordinary exists and that they really do stock it.

Fortunately I know exactly which little brown box on the shelf contains silistop so can offer instructions if I need it.

Thats the stuff. I didnt realise it was antistatic I assumed it had a static charge to allow it to stick to panels and attract overspray.

Any paint supplier or motorfactors will have it. I just ask for a roll of masking film.

you do get static build up,by rubbing down, wiping off.
a old trick was to earth out the car,by putting a light chain from exhaust to the floor.
just wrap it around ex. then lay end on floor.it all helps.
also sheeting outwith poly. sheet has a lot of static in it.

Damn and blast! Washing and panel wipe didn't make much difference - still fish eyes. Tried a anti-silicone additive, and that's not helped either, though it seems better over the bits I sprayed last time them rubbed down than over the rest of the panel. Not great even there.

Wondering whether it's worth taking the thing to a paint shop. I've a feeling I'm not going to get around this.

what is it your painting and what paint are you using??
sounds like you might be as well sanding right back to metal and starting again.

Already been at bare metal once - sandblasted the whole shell. I would imagine the same thing wouldn't happen again if I repeated the process as I've not identified the cause for certain. It's a Renault 4 and the troubles are in the final coat of 2 pack acrylic.

Hopefully a local painter will be around this evening to quote for finishing off the job.

where are you spraying?
turtle wax polish is murder for silicon.
i'm a sprayer and if i can help i will.
there is another trick,that is to rub idown again.
then spray isolator,then prime.topcoat again.

It's in my garage. Unfortunately it's shared with someone else who is working on a glassfibre car. I suspect the contamination has come from there. Mound release agant and all that. He drives me mad - fills the workshop when he's there, treats my tools and consumables as his own, and now will have cost me a lot of time and money.

Probably is going to be a rub down and start again job, but I can't do that here if the garage is contaminated and will just infect the paint again. I'll sub the job out. Have a bloke who I met in the paint shop and offered very helpful advise popping around tomorrow night so hopefully he'll sort it.

Paint guy popped around tonight and seemed very confident - he's had silicone problems before. He reckoned half the problem was the car had been sitting with flatted paint for too long and had time to pick up contamination.

So it's his to finish. Should be able to fit it in to the paint shop in about 6 weeks, so in the meantime I can be messing around building the chassis. I'll report back on what he does, probably going to be a good sand and a wet on wet.
