fitting a used wood burner

Don’t get stuck on Clearview, as I said I own one now but things have moved on, the WoodWarm (also own one) or the Clock(no personal experience) are generally considered an improvement. You won’t go wrong with a Clearview and it’s an order of magnitude better than an old Villager etc but you may do better for the same money.

If you have FB then the woodburners group on there is a useful resource, best stove is asked weekly and you will see all three brands I mention above have a strong showing, in fact very little else gets a look in.

Location of the stove can have implications too, some need much more distance from combustables than others if you have not go an old chimney breast to put them in. I bough contura for that reason.

We've got a Burley, cant fault it and they've claimed for years to be the worlds most efficient stove. We bought it as the door glass is huge and the flames do a nice swirl when its hot, something also rings a bell about it needing less clearance than a lot of other stoves.

the burning of wood is still rubbish the burley isnt really that efficent and neither is many wood stoves out there either

the ones using secondary do improve the burning characteristics of a wood stove and do burn the gasses off

sounds like i may have to go and have a look at clearview as they arnt that far away really. just been haveing a bit of a work out this evening how to do the lineing ect

It's genuinely worth a visit, absolutely stunning house/showroom. Obviously they are running perect wood and chimneys but you can get a real sense of how one them feels in a big room.

One thing to bare in mind don't think you can go there and have a deal, the price is the price. A friend of mine went there with his wife, they been messing with old wood burners for years and had the money to buy a Clearview and his wife wanted one. Asked for a discount and the guy said "why would we discount them when we can sell them at full price all year round and there is a lead time due to the demand?".

We've had ours about 5 years and they don't cost much more now than they did then(I think about £20 more), we were lucky because they had a cancelled order in exactly the spec we wanted so I walked in paid and drove home with it.

Something interesting they mention on their website is that naturally dried wood is better than kiln dried.

I'm curious, secondary what?

Ours seems ok, preheats the combustion air, no smoke once lit and runs for weeks at 12+ hours a day through winter before some ash needs removed. Sweep the flue once a year and get half a bucket of soot.

Secondary air. Its the way the hot gasses circulate along ng with combustion air, making the burn more efficient and supposedly keeping the glass clean

Gotcha, I thought it might have been that thing where there are two chambers with second chamber used to burn the gas from the wood, pyrolyitic stove rings a bell?
