How did you work out the dimensions of the maps to cut for your seat? Do you have plans for the kirkey style seat, or are you getting templates off the original and then cutting them in ali?

A quick question.
If I were to make up a set of these, is there a difference in the dimension of the two halves? do you design in a clearance for the material.

Would you be willing to post up dimensions of your die (or links to somewhere that has the information) so that i could machine up a copy.

I have not made any tooling like this in about 20 years since i left college, but seeing this has sparked the imagination and I figure i could have a go at this.

Hi I managed to get a hold of a new seat from a local lad who is building a new F2 stock car so took card templates but there is a difference in the rear width (backside) also each fold is a different angle which was a pain but managed to get it folded today. Need to source some aluminium beading now.

Hi made the tooling up as I went along the angle was what tooling I had there.Made the hole in the bottom die .5mm larger so as not to bind and gave a clearence of 2mm on the taper and bottom face to allow for the thickness of the aluminium. Will measure up if you wish but all depends on what hole size you want on the panel. One thing to be aware of is the tooling needs an outer flange as this helps keep the sheet flat after forming I found this out on the first one I made.

With regard to the finished size of the tool, that can be scaled up or down to whatever my available material. I do not at the moment have the need for the tool, but moreover it seems a good thing to make to get back in the swing of things on the lathe which I finally got out of storage.

So from your reply, please correct any misunderstanding

The angle face of the die is the same angle as whatever lathetool you had to hand.
The bore in the bottom die is .5mm larger than the pin on the top die.
If you imagine the die assembled and together, there is 2mm clearance between the faces of the top and bottom dies - Is this achieved by the pin of the top die bottoming out in the bore of the bottom die or is the gap simply maintained by the material.
Are the two diameters (each end) of the taper the same on each piece. see photo, maybe clearer than my words, is A the same as B and material clearance maintained by the 2mm vertical clearance between the two halves

There will be a clearence of whatever metal thickness you are using between A and B I am using 2mm so it would be minus 4mm on the dia.the distance between both dies will ba achieved with the metal. Example not actual sizes - so pin dia 15mm hole dia 15.5 A 26mm B 30mm.
Now that I look at you picture you have me thinking, the taper does not have to form/press but sure i made it smaller will check in the morning going to pour a wee dram for myself.
