Floor Cable protection covers

Finally getting the workshop mostly my workbench to how I want it taken quite some time!

I’ve made a new cabinet to house tig (will go where my helmet is) cooler and plasma just need to do the last finishing and add front door

would like the gas bottles chained up against the wall where they are in the pics
Currently have 2 of each gas but will reduce to 1 of each (2 bottles in total)

My bench is away from the wall so I can get all the way around it. Does mean that I’ll need to run gas, air and power a short way (about 1mtr) along a floor then up the wall to the various outlets and gas bottles.

So I really need some mechanical protection from falling objects from the bench etc. can anyone recommend anything off the shelf. There’ll be some 5 core 4mm several air, 2 x gas, 13a single phase cable and 2 more 4core 3 phase cable to house and protect

I do have a part sheet of 3mm Ali chequerplate so I could fold up a two sided ramp around 30mm high in centre with added strengthening ribs on the underside. Just wanted to see what other options/ideas people come up with

Also if anyone has a recommendation for some good quality hose for gas the kemppi came with a nice reinforced rubber hose but I’ll need to extend it so would like similar

I was a lucky bugger buying it for the price I did it’s 4mtrs x 1.2mtrs. Bit big really but it was at the right price

came with 2 of the side tables so one is off if I need to do something longer/wider the other I thought to utilise for vice and metal craft bender.

It’s in use everyday just got some more tooling to make for it to make proper jigs up for the work I do.

The trouble is you will trip over it.

How often would you need to access or relocate the cables?

Could you make a raised/suspended plywood floor (intermittent 18mm high strips covered with a continuous sheet) as that would be good to walk on.

Maybe some of the heavy duty rubber mats with slots cut in them.

Whatever you end up with as sure as eggs are eggs you will end up tripping over it . Any chance of dropping them down from the ceiling?

I think you will spend your life tripping over anything like that, may be better to chase out the floor and drop in a shallow bit of trunking, you could then put a screw down lid in it that sits flush with the floor.

I was gifted a bunch of ex milking parlour matts .Rubber 1" thick and virtually indestructible . Interlocking so no gaps .

I think for the amount of stuff you are looking at running, it is going to have to be a chase. One or two cables wouldn't be so bad but you would have to have multiple "trip strips" for that lot, and that will get very annoying quickly.
Also consider running one airline across to the bench and splitting it there.

The ceiling height is massive I could come off the wall In trunking (I could use tubing or something) and then drop down the bench so nothing is on the floor.

Sadly it’s a rented workshop otherwise this would be a great idea.

Tripping over it isn’t really something I had considered! So may need a rethink!

The continuous platform idea could work as well and something I thought about before.

I don’t need access every day it’ll be cleaning out the extractor, any big jobs The only time I’d need to get to the cable is if I need the mig elsewhere. 99% of my work is at the bench mostly one off production.

If the ceiling is too high you could make a wall mounted boom arm to swing across the workbench to allow you to drop all services to wherever you want them.

This is an option I hadn’t considered could get make an L shaped pipework ( some 2.5” or similar) to come off the top of the wall (2.4mtr high) and a couple of brackets to fix to the bench. All cables and pipes to run inside so they are protected.

Thanks. Slowly getting there lots of junk been cleared out still have a number of machines to get up and running but progress is happening. Maybe I should do a project thread on it all at some point might be interesting to some to see what goes into Setting up and running a full time fab shop.

Not a criticism, there seems to be a lot of timber around, which to me, seems at odds with welding/cutting/grinding operations. How do you mitigate the risks?

I put one of them in front of my main work bench & it has made a huge difference on my feet & legs - they're no longer aching at the end of a long day! The welder, etc will still roll across it & it should give cables enough protection.

But for a dedicated welding bench like that I would drop all your services from the ceiling. That means you don't have to drag cables, etc around the bench, leaving the floor clear.

I think if you make an area with a slightly higher raised floor you'll get used to it quickly. My shed is a patchwork of different slopes and levels with low beams to duck too. Just like living in an old house with odd steps and low doorways, you get used to it and develop a flow walking around very quickly.

I had those a year or two back but found them a fantastic " C*ap Trap" just difficult/impossible to keep clean. Swarf etc just loved them .

I got the idea from workstations in factories where all the tools are fed from overhead and can be pulled down when needed. They are on a retractable line a bit like a retractable clothes line. For your gas lines you could even use a small retractable air line as it will be after the regulator. I have seen this boom arm system used with a curtain rail type of setup so you can easily pull more cable/hose out easily. You can even get retractable power reels aparently.
